{"id":9852,"date":"2026-06-29T07:31:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T13:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9852"},"modified":"2026-06-29T07:31:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T13:31:41","slug":"philemon-18-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9852","title":{"rendered":"Philemon 1:8-13"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text Phlm-1-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29948\" class=\"text Phlm-1-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>yet\u00a0for love\u2019s sake I rather appeal\u00a0to you\u2014being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ\u2014<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29949\" class=\"text Phlm-1-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>I appeal to you for my son\u00a0Onesimus, whom I have begotten\u00a0while in my chains,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29950\" class=\"text Phlm-1-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29951\" class=\"text Phlm-1-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29952\" class=\"text Phlm-1-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paul is making a gracious plea for Onesimus. He is coming to the purpose of his letter. He approaches his subject diplomatically and cautiously and lovingly. He is going to make his request for Onesimus on a threefold basis:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;For love&#8217;s sake.&#8221; This is the love of Paul and Philemon for each other as believers in Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Being such an one as Paul the aged.&#8221; Paul was only in his sixties, but he was an old man. He had suffered and had been persecuted as a missionary for Christ. This had aged him. Paul says to Philemon, &#8220;You know that I am an old man now.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;A prisoner of Jesus Christ.&#8221; It is evident that he could not come to Philemon in person.&#8221; \u2014 McGee, page 187.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Therefore (v.8) \u2014 referring back to what Paul said about Philemon&#8217;s love and faith in vs.5-7.<\/h3>\n<h3>in Christ (v.8) \u2014 the source of Paul&#8217;s authority as an apostle<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">appeal (v.9) \u2014 Paul chose not to exercise his apostolic authority; instead, he chose the path of love and grace and left the matter up to Philemon. \u2014 Grace, page 2167.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>whom I have begotten (v.10) \u2014 Paul led Onesimus to Christ.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This verse (v.11) contains a play on words. The name Onesimus means &#8220;useful&#8221; or &#8220;profitable.&#8221; Paul is saying that Onesimus had previously not lived up to his name, but now (since his salvation) he will not only be useful to Philemon, but already has proven himself such to Paul. \u2014 KJV Commentary, page 1667.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paul is saying, &#8220;When you had Profitable, you didn&#8217;t have Profitable.
