{"id":9806,"date":"2026-05-22T06:29:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9806"},"modified":"2026-05-22T06:29:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:29:32","slug":"james-54-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9806","title":{"rendered":"James 5:4-6"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30359\" class=\"text Jas-5-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30360\" class=\"text Jas-5-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30361\" class=\"text Jas-5-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Sabaoth (v.4) = armies, hosts, an innumerable throng<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">James was infuriated when he discovered that the rich landowners were withholding wages from the poor, and the law justified his righteous anger.&#8221; <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-5540\" class=\"text Deut-24-14\">\u201cYou shall not\u00a0oppress a hired servant\u00a0who is\u00a0poor and needy,\u00a0whether\u00a0one of your brethren or one of the aliens who\u00a0is\u00a0in your land within your gates.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-5541\" class=\"text Deut-24-15\">Each day\u00a0you shall give\u00a0him\u00a0his wages, and not let the sun go down on it, for he\u00a0is\u00a0poor and has set his heart on it;\u00a0lest he cry out against you to the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, and it be sin to you&#8221; (Deuteronomy 24:14-15).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The rich would often withhold wages until the next day when their memory of the preceding day wasn&#8217;t as clear concerning what they had agreed to pay. By doing so, they were <em>robbing<\/em> the poor of what rightfully belonged to them. Thus, their riches were unjustly gained at the expense of the poor. According to the law, this was a sin. The hired servant dared not complain &#8230; because he feared he would not be hired the next day. But the hired servant did have recourse: he could take the injustice that was done to him to the Lord. &#8230; James tell sus they cried unto the Lord of Sabbath. This particular title is borrowed from the Old Testament where it is translated Lord of hosts, the One who created the sun, moon, and stars. The same God who spoke and worlds came into being is also deeply concerned about the mistreatment of the poor and needy. \u2014 Sadler, pages 128-129<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">An ox greedily eats the rich herbage on the very day that it is to be slaughtered, so the senseless rich indulged their passions &#8230; on the very eve of the coming judgment (v.5). \u2014 Williams, page 996.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The &#8220;day of slaughter&#8221; refers to the day of Israel&#8217;s judgment. The picture here is that they have been unknowingly fattening themselves as a sheep or ox does in preparation for its own day of slaughter.
