{"id":969,"date":"2010-08-26T05:00:20","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T11:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=969"},"modified":"2022-11-12T07:28:29","modified_gmt":"2022-11-12T13:28:29","slug":"galatians-115-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=969","title":{"rendered":"Galatians 1:15-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15<\/sup> But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother\u2019s womb and called me through His grace, <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16<\/sup> to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17<\/sup> nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>but when (v.15) \u2014 Paul mentions his salvation so he could explain what happened immediately after.<\/h3>\n<h3>pleased God (v.15) \u2014 It was neither sought or desired by Paul, but entirely by God.<\/h3>\n<h3>who separated me from (v.15) \u2014 should be &#8220;who separated me, even from &#8230; &#8221; God&#8217;s purpose for Paul was determined even before Paul was born. In his other letters, Paul frequently says he was an apostle by the will of God.<\/h3>\n<h3>called me (v.15) \u2014 on the Damascus road (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1454\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:1-9<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>reveal (v.16) = uncover, unveil. God uncovered previously hidden truth about Jesus Christ to Paul.<\/h3>\n<h3>that (v.16) \u2014 &#8220;in order that&#8221; or &#8220;for the purpose&#8221; that<\/h3>\n<h3>I might preach (v.16) \u2014 so Paul could preach with apostolic authority.<\/h3>\n<h3>Gentiles (v.16) \u2014 in Greek <em>ethnos<\/em>, from which we get &#8220;heathen.&#8221; Anyone not a Jew.<\/h3>\n<h3>immediately (v.16) \u2014 after his time in Damascus (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1465\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:19-25<\/span><\/a>). Paul&#8217;s point is that he had no opportunity to receive his message from any man.<\/h3>\n<h3>did not &#8230; confer (v.16) \u2014 He didn&#8217;t discuss the matter with others for the purpose of advice or instruction.<\/h3>\n<h3>flesh and blood (v.16) \u2014 human (with an emphasis on human limitation), in contrast to the Holy Spirit.<\/h3>\n<h3>neither did I go up to Jerusalem (v.17) \u2014 Paul recognizes the authority of the 12 apostles, but insists on his independence from them.<\/h3>\n<h3>go up (v.17) \u2014 used by Jesus specifically when speaking of a journey to Jerusalem, which was located in the hills of Palestine and was the location of the temple.<\/h3>\n<h3>but (v.17) \u2014 contrast. Paul didn&#8217;t go to Jerusalem. He went to Arabia. He didn&#8217;t confer with the apostles. He communed with God.<\/h3>\n<h3>This trip (to Arabia) is mentioned nowhere else. It may have taken place before the &#8220;certain days&#8221; of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1465\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:19<\/span><\/a> (probably), or it may have been after <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1465\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 22<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1468\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 25<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>Arabia (v.17) \u2014 district east and south of Damascus. This may have been where Paul spent the three years of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=972\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 1:18<\/span><\/a>. Arabia gives the idea of desolate wilderness where Paul could be apart from men and in communication with God.<\/h3>\n<h3>Damascus (v.17) \u2014 Part of Israel under David, but in Paul&#8217;s time it was ruled by Aretus IV, King of Arabia.
