{"id":948,"date":"2010-08-14T05:00:51","date_gmt":"2010-08-14T11:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=948"},"modified":"2022-11-12T07:29:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-12T13:29:57","slug":"galatians-11-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=948","title":{"rendered":"Galatians 1:1-5"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">1<\/sup> Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead), <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2<\/sup> and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3<\/sup> Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4<\/sup> who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5<\/sup> to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>apostle (v. 1) = a person sent \u2014 divinely commissioned to preach. An appointed representative with an official status and with credentials.<\/h3>\n<h3>Paul&#8217;s right to the title \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2316\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 9:1-18<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>not from (v. 1) \u2014 not by the authority of<\/h3>\n<h3>men (v. 1) \u2014 including the 12, the Jerusalem Council or anyone else<\/h3>\n<h3>nor through (v. 1) \u2014 not with the process or medium of men or of any one man, contrasted with &#8220;but through Jesus Christ&#8221; \u2014 by <u>His<\/u> authority and by the authority of the Father \u2014 Jesus Christ and the Father acting in unity. Not even from God through men, but directly from God. <u>Not,<\/u>as Elisha was commissioned by Elijah (1 Kings 19:16), with God&#8217;s authority, but directly by God.<\/h3>\n<h3>but (v.1) \u2014 in Greek, a strong contrast.<\/h3>\n<h3>The Judaizers were belittling Paul, so he opens with a statement of his authority from God.<\/h3>\n<h3>brethren (v. 2) \u2014 fellow workers, travel companions, all of whom agree with what Paul is about to say. But it was Paul&#8217;s apostleship that had been called into doubt, so he speaks in the singular.<\/h3>\n<h3>churches (v.2) \u2014 plural, the only letter to a group of churches.<\/h3>\n<h3>Paul&#8217;s lack of commendation for the faith of the Galatians is notable. He was perplexed by their actions (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1064\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4:20<\/span><\/a>). This is the only letter in which Paul doesn&#8217;t express thankfulness or ask for prayer. (He even does so to the Corinthians.) Paul doesn&#8217;t address the Galatians as saints.<\/h3>\n<h3>The Father and Jesus Christ are the joint source of grace and peace (v.3).<\/h3>\n<h3>Grace \u2014 common Greek salutation. Peace \u2014 common Hebrew salutation.<\/h3>\n<h3>for (v.4) = substitution.<\/h3>\n<h3>sins (v.4) \u2014 a missing of the mark<\/h3>\n<h3>deliver us (v.4) = rescue us from danger from evil influences and tendencies; deliver us from bondage<\/h3>\n<h3>present evil age (v.4) \u2014 as contrasted with a future age when Christ will reign.
