{"id":9357,"date":"2026-03-11T06:12:42","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T12:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9357"},"modified":"2026-03-11T06:12:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T12:12:43","slug":"ecclesiastes-11-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9357","title":{"rendered":"Ecclesiastes 1:1-3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text Eccl-1-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1&nbsp;<\/span>The words of the Preacher, the son of David,&nbsp;king in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-17318\" class=\"text Eccl-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cVanity of vanities,\u201d says the Preacher; <\/span><span class=\"text Eccl-1-2\">\u201cVanity of vanities,&nbsp;all&nbsp;is&nbsp;vanity.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-17319\" class=\"text Eccl-1-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3&nbsp;<\/sup>What profit has a man from all his labor i<\/span><span class=\"text Eccl-1-3\">n which he toils under the sun?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The author is Solomon, as he is the only son of David who was king of Israel (1:12).<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preacher (v.1) = the leader who speaks in the assembly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Verses 2 and 3 give the purpose of the book and ask the question that will be answered both negatively and positively. The wisdom used to answer the question comes from the One Shepherd (12:11).<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vanity (v.2) = breath, vapor. Empty of meaning or worth. Used 35 times in the book. Used in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3999\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 39:6-7<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7320\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">94:11<\/span><\/a> to express transience or worthlessness.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vanity of vanities (v.2) is a Hebrew way of expressing a superlative, as in\u00a0 &#8220;King of kings&#8221; and &#8220;Holy of Holies.&#8221; The most utter vanity.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Profit [v.3] signifies that which remains over, either as here, clear gain, profit, or that which has the preeminence, i.e., superiority, precedence, or is the foremost. this word occurs only in this book and serves our Preacher uniquely in his desire to raise the issue of profit as it relates to the whole law of man&#8217;s life under the sun. &#8230; The\u00a0 natural man is under the sun in a fallen world, a world where he reaps day after day the full implications of Adam&#8217;s disobedience and death (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4503\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 2:17<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=314\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 5:12<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 KJ Commentary, page 736.<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The strict meaning of the word &#8220;profit&#8221; is <em>that which is left over<\/em> or <em>the surplus<\/em>. Think of it in terms of the balance sheet of life. What is man&#8217;s net profit for all his labor which he labors? What is man&#8217;s ultimate return on investment?
