67\u00a0<\/sup>And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, \u201cYou also were with Jesus of Nazareth.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

68\u00a0<\/sup>But he denied it, saying, \u201cI neither know nor understand what you are saying.\u201d And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

69\u00a0<\/sup>And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, \u201cThis is one of them.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

70\u00a0<\/sup>But he denied it again. <\/span>And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, \u201cSurely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

71\u00a0<\/sup>Then he began to curse and swear, \u201cI do not know this Man of whom you speak!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

72\u00a0<\/sup>A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, \u201cBefore the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.\u201d<\/span> And when he thought about it, he wept.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

courtyard (v.66) \u2014 the outer porch of the high priest’s house<\/h3>\n

looked (v.66) = gazed intently<\/h3>\n

curse and swear (v.71) = to declare anathema or cursed. The Jews had a practice of laying themselves under a curse (Acts 23:12<\/span><\/a>) … Peter declares himself subject to the divine curse if he is not telling the truth when he disclaims all acquaintance with Jesus. … The English words “curse” and “swear” today usually are understood to mean that the person is using profanity. But the Greek text here shows that Peter was not guilty of that. \u2014 Wuest, page 275.<\/span><\/h3>\n

wept (v.72) \u2014 began to weep, and probably kept at it for a long time. Matthew 26:75<\/span><\/a> has, literally “burst into tears.”<\/h3>\n

From my notes on the passage in John \u2014 Most commentaries focus on what Peter did wrong. But perhaps the point is that we will fail but Christ won\u2019t. The contrast in this passage is between Peter\u2019s response to questions and Christ\u2019s response to questions.It is not so much a focus on Peter but on the One who never fails.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
