{"id":8974,"date":"2024-09-30T09:23:54","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T15:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8974"},"modified":"2024-09-30T09:23:54","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T15:23:54","slug":"mark-81-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8974","title":{"rendered":"Mark 8:1-9"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text Mark-8-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24503\" class=\"text Mark-8-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">\u201cI have<\/span> <span class=\"woj\">compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24504\" class=\"text Mark-8-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"woj\">And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24505\" class=\"text Mark-8-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Then His disciples answered Him, \u201cHow can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-24506\" class=\"text Mark-8-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>He asked them, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cHow many loaves do you have?\u201d <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Mark-8-5\">And they said, \u201cSeven.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24507\" class=\"text Mark-8-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24508\" class=\"text Mark-8-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24509\" class=\"text Mark-8-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-24510\" class=\"text Mark-8-9\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away,<\/span> <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Also found in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3044\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 15:32-38<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>On the earlier occasion (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8944\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 6:35-44<\/span><\/a>), when Jesus fed a crowd, the disciples had approached Him and asked what should be done. Here, Jesus initiates the conversation.<\/h3>\n<h3>The disciples (v.4) had apparently learned nothing from the earlier miracle. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8947\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 6:52<\/span><\/a>; 8:16.)<\/h3>\n<h3>satisfy (v.4) = lit. &#8220;feed, fill, satisfy with food&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>wilderness (v.4) = uninhabited region. The people had apparently followed Him with no thought of their own needs.<\/h3>\n<h3>filled (v.8) \u2014 The people all had as much food as they wanted.<\/h3>\n<h3>The durative (continuing, not completed) tense is used in verses 5-6. Wuest translates these verses like this:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>And He went to asking them, How many loaves of bread do you have? and they said, Seven. And He commands the crowd to recline on the ground. and having taken the seven loaves of bread, having given thanks, He broke, and kept on giving them to His disciples in order that they might keep on setting them forth. And they served the crowd.<\/em> \u2014 Wuest, page 158.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>blessed (v.7) = asked God&#8217;s blessing on a thing, prayed Him to bless it to one&#8217;s use.<\/h3>\n<h3>baskets (v.8) \u2014 The word used for basket is different from the word used in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8944\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 6:43<\/span><\/a>. There, it refers to a small basket used to carry provisions \u2014 like a lunch basket. Here, in Mark 8, the word refers to a large basket, one that can hold a man.
