Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #009900;\">Dad&#8217;s notes \u2014\u00a0 The Son desires glory (v. 1-5)<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #009900;\">The Son glorifies the Father (vs. 1)<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #009900;\">The Father glorifies the Son (v. 5)<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Jesus spoke these words (v. 1) \u2014 The words He had been telling the disciples before the prayer.<\/h3>\n<h3>Christ spoke this prayer out loud in the presence of the disciples so they would know the intercession He would make for them when He returned to heaven (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=888\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">17:13<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n<h3>The Son addressed God as Father (vs. 1) as do we (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3701\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 2:18<\/span><\/a>). Calling God &#8220;Father&#8221; shows His right to be heard and His affection.<\/h3>\n<h3>hour has come (v. 1) \u2014 His sacrificial offering. Scripture, in type, prophecy, and history pointed to this.<\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus asked for glorification <u>in<\/u> His suffering and <u>after<\/u> His suffering (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=793\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 12:28<\/span><\/a>). The Son could not give eternal life unless and until He was glorified in both senses.<\/h3>\n<h3>Christ was to be glorified through His death, resurrection, and exaltation, and all this glorified the Father by showing His holiness, righteousness, justice, mercy, love, faithfulness, and power. Christ left His glory when He came to Earth, but He would soon take it up again.<\/h3>\n<h3>eternal life (v. 2) = divine nature = knowledge of the Son (as a result of His glorification). The way to eternal life is through the knowledge of God given by Jesus Christ.<\/h3>\n<h3>that they may know (v. 3) \u2014 continuing action, get to know<\/h3>\n<h3>finished the work (v. 4) \u2014 anticipation of the cross.<\/h3>\n<h3>Our salvation glorifies the Father. The Son&#8217;s glorification accomplishes it (v. 5).
