{"id":8524,"date":"2023-09-30T13:50:35","date_gmt":"2023-09-30T19:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8524"},"modified":"2023-09-30T13:51:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-30T19:51:13","slug":"psalm-129","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8524","title":{"rendered":"Psalm 129"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"psalm-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"text Ps-129-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A Song of Ascents.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-129-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>\u201cMany a time they have afflicted me from my youth,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let Israel now say\u2014<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16135\" class=\"text Ps-129-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2 <\/sup>\u201cMany a time they have afflicted me from my youth;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Yet they have not prevailed against me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16136\" class=\"text Ps-129-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>The plowers plowed on my back;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They made their furrows long.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16137\" class=\"text Ps-129-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> is righteous;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He has cut in pieces the cords of the wicked.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16138\" class=\"text Ps-129-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Let all those who hate Zion<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Be put to shame and turned back.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16139\" class=\"text Ps-129-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>Let them be as the grass on the housetops,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Which withers before it grows up,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16140\" class=\"text Ps-129-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7 <\/sup>With which the reaper does not fill his hand,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor he who binds sheaves, his arms.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16141\" class=\"text Ps-129-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>Neither let those who pass by them say,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThe blessing of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord <\/span>be upon you;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-129-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">We bless you in the name of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The psalm begins [vs.1-3] by affirming the unfortunate fact of history (both biblical and post-biblical, up to the present day) that many times various groups and individuals have persecuted Israel\u2014i.e., the people of Israel, here personified as God&#8217;s &#8220;national&#8221; son\u2014beginning in his &#8220;youth&#8221; (referring to Israel&#8217;s affliction in Egypt; see Exodus 1:11-14; Hosea 2:15). Nonetheless, Israel&#8217;s adversaries have not prevailed against him (i.e., to wipe him out as a people)\u2014nor will they ever do so, for Israel&#8217;s continued existence is guaranteed by God&#8217;s eternal and unconditional promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4667\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 12:1-3<\/span><\/a>; Jeremiah 31:35-37; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=422\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 11:29<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Wechsler, page 308.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Every instance in which Israel&#8217;s existence is threatened or constrained by persecution ultimately entails God&#8217;s responsive intervention to preserve and redeem them. This principle of God&#8217;s intervention &#8230; is concisely affirmed by the statement that &#8220;The LORD is righteous\u2014v.4)\u00a0 and therefore (i.e., because He is righteous) He has (and will continue to) cut in two the cords of the wicked. \u2014 Wechsler, page 309.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The concluding language of this psalm (vs.5-8) which emphasizes the withholding of the LORD&#8217;s blessing from Israel&#8217;s persecutors hearkens specifically to the language of the Abrahamic Covenant according to which God promises to &#8220;bless&#8221; those who &#8220;bless&#8221; Israel and to &#8220;curse&#8221; those who &#8220;curse&#8221; Israel. In the end &#8230; the implication of the psalmist here is that one&#8217;s spiritual status is to a large degree manifest in their attitude and actions toward Israel, for the object of the Father&#8217;s love should also, inevitably, be that of His children (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=422\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 11:28<\/span><\/a>; 1 John 4:20). \u2014 Wechsler, page 310.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Wechsler&#8217;s premise in the previous paragraph is true for all since Christ is part of Israel and brings us, in the age of grace, spiritual blessings. It&#8217;s even more true for those living before and after the age of grace.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Messiah the composer of the Psalm, will sing it in sympathy with Israel in the future time of her oppression by Anti-Christ. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The affliction in the past was caused by the Egyptians, the Midianites, the Syrians, etc. They plowed Israel&#8217;s back and make long their furrows. The power that energized them was Satan. He also moved the High Priests and the Romans to scourge Messiah, the true Israel. &#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">But the affliction that yet awaits the Nation will far exceed that already suffered, and the faith of the Remnant will then be sustained by the teaching of this song. Just as the enemy failed in the past, so will he fail in the future. His failure in the past is stated (vs.1-3); his failure in the future is predicted (vs.5-8).
