{"id":8511,"date":"2023-09-27T10:22:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-27T16:22:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8511"},"modified":"2023-09-27T10:23:04","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T16:23:04","slug":"psalm-126","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8511","title":{"rendered":"Psalm 126"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"psalm-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"text Ps-126-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A Song of Ascents.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-126-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">126\u00a0<\/span>When the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> brought back the captivity of Zion,<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">We were like those who dream.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16118\" class=\"text Ps-126-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2 <\/sup>Then our mouth was filled with laughter,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And our tongue with singing.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Then they said among the nations,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThe <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> has done great things for them.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16119\" class=\"text Ps-126-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> has done great things for us,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And we are glad.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16120\" class=\"text Ps-126-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Bring back our captivity, O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">As the streams in the South.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16121\" class=\"text Ps-126-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Those who sow in tears<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shall reap in joy.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-16122\" class=\"text Ps-126-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>He who continually goes forth weeping,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bearing seed for sowing,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-126-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bringing his sheaves with him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The return of Israel from seventy years of captivity in Babylon is the background of this Psalm of thanksgiving. But it was not a complete return, for only a remnant returned to the land of their fathers &#8230; This Psalm has more than a historical value, because Zion&#8217;s restoration, and Israel&#8217;s redemption are in view when King Messiah appears the second time.\u00a0 &#8230; At the time of this writing, Israel is making great progress toward restoring the country and the city. Hence the fulfillment of this prophecy appears to be in the near future. &#8230; This Psalm finds application with the Jewish Remnant of faithful believers of the Tribulation period. \u2014 Phillips, pages 308-310.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In [this psalm] Israel&#8217;s High Priest prays fro His people&#8217;s restoration to Divine relationships (v.4). He compares their present condition to pain-burdened husbandmen in the hot southern desert sowing their scanty store of seed in a time of famine. It is a day of trouble; and He animates His people&#8217;s faith by recalling the joy that their fore-fathers felt when delivered from the Assyrian. \u2014 Williams, page 402.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The psalmist begins (vs.1-3) by joyful reflecting on the past event of God&#8217;s &#8220;restoring&#8221; the returning ones of Zion, referring to those deported by Nebuchadnezzar from the southern kingdom of Judah who, at the decree of Cyrus, returned after 70 years of exile to Jerusalem (see 2 Chronicles 36:22-23; Jeremiah 25:11; 29:10; Daniel 9:2). \u2014 Wechsler, page 302.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In [v.4] the psalmist entreats God to restore (i.e., bring back) the exiled ones of Israel. &#8230; The reason for this entreaty becomes evident when one considers that much\u2014if not most\u2014of the Jewish population did not in fact return to the promised land, and to live outside of the land is, biblically-speaking, to be &#8220;in exile.&#8221; God, speaking through Jeremiah, points out that there is also a spiritual component to the exile, from which Israel will only be fully restored when they search for Him with all their heart (Jeremiah 29:13-14). An allusion to this final restoration is suggested by the image of &#8220;streams in the south (lit., &#8220;Negev&#8221;\u2014i.e., the dry southern region of Israel), referring &#8230; to permanently fruitful transformation of that land from the waters that emerge with the Messiah&#8217;s advent as the worldwide king (see Ezekiel 47:1-12). \u2014 Wechsler, page 303.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In verses 5-6 the psalmist expands the allusion at the end of the previous section into a full-blown and emotionally-laden portrayal of final restoration\u2014specifically, the restoration of (1) the people of Israel, not only from their geographical exile from the promised land, but also from their more general &#8220;exile&#8221; from the pre-Fall ideal of perfection untinged by depravity or sorrow (so per. v.5, the phraseology of which hearkens to the similar portrayal of final\/messianic restoration in, for example, Isaiah 25:8-9; 35:10; 51:11; Revelation 21:4; cf. also <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2719\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 5:4<\/span><\/a>); and (2) the land (i.e., creation) itself, from its own &#8220;exile&#8221; and &#8220;enslavement to corruption&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=377\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 8:21<\/span><\/a>) following the fall of man (so per v.6 to which compare the description of the land&#8217;s permanently restored fruitfulness, concurrent with Israel&#8217;s permanent return from exile, in Amos 9:13-15). \u2014 Wechsler, page 303.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Song of Ascents. 126\u00a0When the Lord brought back the captivity of Zion, We were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, And our tongue with singing.
