{"id":845,"date":"2010-04-25T05:00:16","date_gmt":"2010-04-25T11:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=845"},"modified":"2022-01-24T18:01:24","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T00:01:24","slug":"john-159-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=845","title":{"rendered":"John 15:9-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 &#8220;As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father&#8217;s commandments and abide in His love.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11 &#8220;These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one&#8217;s life for his friends.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>The commentaries apply this to the Church, but in the context of the entire chapter, it&#8217;s obvious that Christ was speaking to the disciples (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=843\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">vs.3<\/span><\/a>, 11, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=848\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">16<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=853\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">27<\/span><\/a>) and, therefore, to Israel.<\/h3>\n<h3>God&#8217;s love is unchanging. As long as His followers focus on it (abide in Him), they&#8217;ll bear fruit. But not if they abide in themselves and focus on their love for Him. Then they&#8217;ll see failure.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;So shall ye be My disciples&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=843\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 15:8<\/span><\/a>). With this should be compared <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=705\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 8:31<\/span><\/a>: &#8220;If <em>ye continue<\/em> in My Word, then are ye My disciples <em>indeed<\/em>.&#8221; Continuance in the Word is not a <em>condition <\/em>of discipleship, but an <em>evidence <\/em>of it. So here, to bear much fruit will make it <em>manifest <\/em>that we <em>are <\/em>His disciples. Just as good fruit on a tree does not <em>make <\/em>the tree a good one, but marks it out as such, so we prove ourselves to be Christ&#8217;s disciples by displaying Christlike qualities.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;As the Father hath loved Me, so I have loved you&#8221; (John 15:9). There is no change of theme, only another aspect of it. In the two previous verses the Lord had described three of the <em>consequences<\/em> of abiding in Him in order to bear fruitfulness; here, and in the three verses that follow, He names three of the <em>varieties <\/em>of the fruit borne; and it is very striking to note that they are identical with the first three and are given in the same order as those enumerated in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1097\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 5:22<\/span><\/a>, where the &#8220;fruit of the Spirit&#8221; is defined.
