TSADDE<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

137\u00a0<\/sup>Righteous are You, O Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em>
\nAnd upright are Your judgments.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

138 <\/sup>Your testimonies, which You have commanded,<\/span><\/em>
\nAre righteous and very faithful.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

139 <\/sup>My zeal has consumed me,<\/span><\/em>
\nBecause my enemies have forgotten Your words.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

140 <\/sup>Your word is very pure;<\/span><\/em>
\nTherefore Your servant loves it.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

141 <\/sup>I am small and despised,<\/span><\/em>
\nYet I do not forget Your precepts.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

142 <\/sup>Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,<\/span><\/em>

143 <\/sup>Trouble and anguish have overtaken me,<\/span><\/em>
\nYet Your commandments are my delights.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

144 <\/sup>The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting;<\/span><\/em>
\nGive me understanding, and I shall live.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

In this stanza, the psalmist had a lot to say about God’s attributes as reflected in His Word.<\/span><\/h3>\n

zeal (v.139) = ardor, jealousy, anger<\/h3>\n

consumed (v.139) = lit. exterminated, put an end to (hyperbolic)<\/h3>\n

small (v.141) = insignificant<\/h3>\n

When the vicissitudes of life dull the shine of other sources of pleasure and delight, the value and appeal of God’s Word become greater, overtaking and sublimating the totality of our yearnings in this life. Hence, in the course of his trouble and anguish (v.143), it is for God’s word, above all else, that the psalmist has longed. \u2014 Wechsler, page 287.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Messiah in these verses sets out in order the excellencies of God’s Word as righteous (v.137), pure (v.140), true (v.142), and everlasting (v.144). …<\/span><\/h3>\n
