{"id":8212,"date":"2023-07-29T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T14:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8212"},"modified":"2023-07-29T08:01:30","modified_gmt":"2023-07-29T14:01:30","slug":"psalm-111","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8212","title":{"rendered":"Psalm 111"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"poetry\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3 class=\"line\"><em><span class=\"chapter-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-111-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>Praise the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>!<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"text Ps-111-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will praise the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> with my whole heart,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15796\" class=\"text Ps-111-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>The works of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> are great,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Studied by all who have pleasure in them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15797\" class=\"text Ps-111-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>His work is honorable and glorious,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And His righteousness endures forever.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15798\" class=\"text Ps-111-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>He has made His wonderful works to be remembered;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> is gracious and full of compassion.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15799\" class=\"text Ps-111-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5 <\/sup>He has given food to those who fear Him;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He will ever be mindful of His covenant.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15800\" class=\"text Ps-111-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>He has declared to His people the power of His works,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In giving them the heritage of the nations.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15801\" class=\"text Ps-111-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>The works of His hands are verity and justice;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">All His precepts are sure.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15802\" class=\"text Ps-111-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>They stand fast forever and ever,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And are done in truth and uprightness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15803\" class=\"text Ps-111-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9 <\/sup>He has sent redemption to His people;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He has commanded His covenant forever:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Holy and awesome is His name.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15804\" class=\"text Ps-111-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>The fear of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> is the beginning of wisdom;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-111-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">His praise endures forever.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word <em>works<\/em> is the keynote of the psalm, occurring constantly (vs.2,3,4,6,7); also the word <em>ever<\/em> (vs.3.5.8-10). &#8230; This psalm is an alphabetical acrostic [22 lines, each beginning with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet]. \u2014 Meyer, page 135.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Several psalms that follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8203\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">110th Psalm<\/span><\/a> ring with praise for the return of the Messiah. Psalms 111, 112, and 113 are called Hallelujah Psalms and will be sung in the great congregation of saved people, particularly Israel, because of the great work the Messiah will do upon His return. \u2014 Phillips, pages279-280.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This and the following psalm are closely connected by parallel themes (i.e., worship, in the psalm focusing on its object, in Psalm 112 on its givers) and a sophisticated parallel structure (both are alphabetic acrostics and both devote the <em>same<\/em> amount of space to the <em>same<\/em> expository points, albeit in an inverse relationship\u2014thus:111:1\/\/112:10; 111:2-9\/\/112:2-9; 111:10\/\/112:1), all of which suggests that they were meant to be read, if not as a unit, then certainly as complimentary to each other. \u2014 Wechsler, page 268.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The psalmist begins with an immediate affirmation of the worship\u2014in this case, specifically, the praise and thanksgiving\u2014to which God is entitled, and which the psalmist, as His creation, is obligated to give Him. The psalmist emphasizes the <em>quality<\/em> of his worship by referring not to use of a certain formula or special wording, but rather to the fact it is given with all his heart (see Deuteronomy 6:5; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3214\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 22:37<\/span><\/a>, etc.) &#8230; The worship of God should not just be personal and private, but also public\u2014i.e., expressed collectively with other believers. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 268-269.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>upright (v.1) = straightforward, in relationship to God, as distinguished from the wicked<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">[Verses 2-9 give] the essential motivation or basis, for all worship of God\u2014to wit: His qualifications as the unique object of worship, as attested to us both by who He <em>is<\/em> and by what He <em>does<\/em>. With respect to who He is, the psalmist focuses on God&#8217;s &#8220;emanant&#8221; or &#8220;transitive&#8221; attributes (those that extend beyond the nature of God Himself and operate within\/upon His creation), such as His righteousness, His grace and compassion, His truth and uprightness, and His holiness and awesomeness. With respect to what He does, the psalmist focuses on those actions of God that directly benefit His people, such as His work of splendor and majesty (which terms are elsewhere connected with God&#8217;s salvific work and the priestly ministry), His wonders, His provision of food to those who fear (worship) Him, His &#8220;remembering (acting upon) His covenant (the Abraham Covenant), and His giving to Israel the heritage (land) of the nations. \u2014 Wechsler, page 269.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>heritage (v.6) = possession, property, inheritance<\/h3>\n<h3>verity (v.7) = truth<\/h3>\n<h3>precepts (v.7)\u00a0 commandments, statutes<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">When one worships God (&#8220;fears&#8221;) consistent with the above-mentioned manner, not only is God Himself glorified, but God&#8217;s purpose for man is also realized and furthered\u2014viz. that he will grow in that wisdom and understanding which alone is able to bring him success (in godly living). \u2014 Wechsler, page 270.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1 Praise the Lord!
