{"id":7877,"date":"2023-05-30T15:55:10","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T21:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7877"},"modified":"2023-05-30T15:55:10","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T21:55:10","slug":"1-peter-51-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7877","title":{"rendered":"1 Peter 5:1-4"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text 1Pet-5-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30468\" class=\"text 1Pet-5-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30469\" class=\"text 1Pet-5-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30470\" class=\"text 1Pet-5-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse one \u2014 The Greek word &#8220;elder&#8221; was used as a designation of a man advanced in years. It became one of the official designations of an officer in a local church who in other places is called an overseer or a bishop (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1898\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 20:17<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1907\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">28<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3448\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 3:2<\/span><\/a>), and whose duty it was to exercise spiritual oversight and authority over its members. &#8230; The word &#8220;witness&#8221; &#8230; does not refer to the act of seeing, but to the act of testifying to what one has seen. \u2014 Wuest, page 124.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The flock belonged to God (v.2). It was among, not beneath the under-shepherds. It was God&#8217;s great heritage. They were not lords over God&#8217;s heritage, but only examples. \u2014 Williams, page 1004.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">examples (v.3) = literally &#8220;a print left as an impression after a blow has been struck, a pattern or model of something else.&#8221; Under-shepherds should be living patterns or models of the Chief Shepherd, the Lord Jesus. \u2014 Wuest, page 125.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse four \u2014 The Greek word translated &#8220;crown&#8221; referred to a crown of victory in the Greek athletic games, a crown given for military valor, or a festal garland worn at marriage feasts. &#8230; &#8220;Fadeth&#8221; is a participle in the Greek describing this crown. The word in its noun form was the name of a flower that did not wither or fade, and which when picked, revived in water. The crown given to victors in either athletics or war was made of oak or ivy leaves, the festal garlands of the marriage feast, of flowers. These would wither and fade.
