{"id":781,"date":"2010-02-09T05:00:02","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T11:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=781"},"modified":"2022-01-20T10:11:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T16:11:30","slug":"john-121-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=781","title":{"rendered":"John 12:1-11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/sup> Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/sup> There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/sup> Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>4<\/strong><\/sup> But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon\u2019s son, who would betray Him, said,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>5<\/strong><\/sup> \u201cWhy was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>6<\/strong><\/sup> This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>7<\/strong><\/sup> But Jesus said, \u201cLet her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>8<\/strong><\/sup> For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>9<\/strong><\/sup> Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus\u2019 sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>10<\/strong><\/sup> But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\"><strong>11<\/strong><\/sup> because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>This event took place on Jesus&#8217;s last trip to Jerusalem \u2014 Luke 18:31-33<\/h3>\n<h3>He arrived in Bethany on Friday (v. 1), a week before His death.<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\">The meal (v. 2) was at the house of Simon the (former) Leper \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3276\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 26:6<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #006600;\">&#8220;But Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with Him&#8221; (12:2). This illustrated the true Christian <em>position<\/em>. Lazarus had been dead, but now alive from the dead, he is <em>seated<\/em> in the company of the Savior. So it is (positionally) with the believer: &#8220;when we are dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ &#8230; And hath raised us up together, and made us <em>sit<\/em> together in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3693\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 2:5-6<\/span><\/a>). We have been &#8220;made meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2048\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Colossians 1:12<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Pink, page 234.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>The other disciples were upset by Mary&#8217;s extravagance, but Judas was their spokesman, or he incited them by his response \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3276\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 26:8<\/span><\/a>; Mark 14:4. He was upset that Mary gave up her 300 denarii investment, then he himself sold out Christ for only 30 denarii.<\/h3>\n<h3>Judas was the treasurer (v. 6), and he stole from the pot.<\/h3>\n<h3>Mary knew something was up (v. 7), even if she didn&#8217;t know the details of Jesus&#8217;s death.
