{"id":775,"date":"2010-02-03T05:00:13","date_gmt":"2010-02-03T11:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=775"},"modified":"2022-01-18T11:32:26","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T17:32:26","slug":"john-1145-52","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=775","title":{"rendered":"John 11:45-52"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>45<\/sup> Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46<\/sup> But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47<\/sup> Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, \u201cWhat shall we do? For this Man works many signs.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48<\/sup> If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49<\/sup> And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, \u201cYou know nothing at all,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50<\/sup> nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">51<\/sup> Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">52<\/sup> and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>council (v. 47) \u2014 the Sanhedrin \u2014 the high priest and seventy members, most of them Sadducees.<\/h3>\n<h3>The council admitted that Christ did many miracles (v. 47).<\/h3>\n<h3>They feared (v. 48) that the Romans, if Christ were proclaimed king, would take away the temple and destroy Israel as a nation \u2014 all of which happened after they put Christ to death.<\/h3>\n<h3>Caiaphas (v. 49) \u2014 son-in-law to Annas. Both were Sadducees and high priests \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1377\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 5:17<\/span><\/a>; Luke 3:2. Caiaphas was high priest over an 18-year span, A.D. 18-36.<\/h3>\n<h3>high priest that year (v. 49). It was supposed to be a position held for life, but the Romans sold it each year to the highest bidder.<\/h3>\n<h3>Caiaphas told the Pharisees that they knew nothing (v. 49). He said Jesus should be killed for expediency&#8217;s sake, the truth notwithstanding. The Sadducees and Pharisees were theological rivals, but they came together to withstand Jesus (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3619\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 2:2<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n<h3>Caiaphas spoke out of wickedness (v. 49-50), but God used him as a prophet to utter truth.
