{"id":7704,"date":"2023-04-14T09:59:30","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T15:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7704"},"modified":"2023-04-14T09:59:30","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T15:59:30","slug":"1-peter-38-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7704","title":{"rendered":"1 Peter 3:8-12"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be\u00a0courteous;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30434\" class=\"text 1Pet-3-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-30435\" class=\"text 1Pet-3-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>For <\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-10\"><span class=\"oblique\">\u201cHe who would love life a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-10\"><span class=\"oblique\">nd see good days, l<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-10\"><span class=\"oblique\">et him<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oblique\">refrain his tongue from evil, a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-10\"><span class=\"oblique\">nd his lips from speaking deceit.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-30436\" class=\"text 1Pet-3-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup><span class=\"oblique\">Let him<\/span> <span class=\"oblique\">turn away from evil and do good; l<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-11\"><span class=\"oblique\">et him seek peace and pursue it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-30437\" class=\"text 1Pet-3-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12 <\/sup><span class=\"oblique\">For the eyes of the<\/span> <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> are <span class=\"oblique\">on the righteous, a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-12\"><span class=\"oblique\">nd His ears<\/span> are open <span class=\"oblique\">to their prayers; b<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text 1Pet-3-12\"><span class=\"oblique\">ut the face of the<\/span> <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> is <span class=\"oblique\">against those who do evil.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>The quote in verses 10-12 is from <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3962\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 34:12-16<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The words &#8220;having compassion&#8221; [v.8] are the translation of a Greek word from which we get our word &#8220;sympathy.&#8221; The word is made up of two Greek words, one word meaning &#8220;to be affected&#8221; by something, hence &#8220;to feel,&#8221; that is, to have feelings stirred up within one by some circumstance, the other word meaning &#8220;with.&#8221; The word means therefore, &#8220;to have a fellow-feeling.&#8221; It refers here to the interchange of fellow-feeling in either joy or sorrow. It is &#8220;rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=435\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 12:15<\/span><\/a>). &#8230; The word &#8220;courteous&#8221; is the translation of a Greek word which means &#8220;humble-minded, having a modest opinion of one&#8217;s self.&#8221; \u2014 Wuest, pages 85-86.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>love (v.8) = phileo = brotherly love<\/h3>\n<h3>returning (v.9) = giving back<\/h3>\n<h3>for (v.9) = literally &#8220;in exchange for&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>reviling (v.9) = insult<\/h3>\n<h3>blessing (v.9) = lit. &#8220;be constantly blessing&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>into this (v.9) = lit. &#8220;for this very purpose&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;will&#8221; [would] is a present participle in the Greek speaking of an action going on in present time, literally, &#8220;he who is wishing or desiring to be loving life.&#8221; The idea is, &#8220;he who is loving life and wishes to continue to do so.&#8221; The word &#8220;refrain&#8221; is the translation of a word which speaks of a natural tendency towards that from which the abstention exhorted is to take place, literally, &#8220;Let him stop the tendency of his tongue from evil.&#8221; \u2014 Wuest, pages 86-87.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;eschew&#8221; [turn away from] came originally from a Norman word which means &#8220;to shun or avoid.&#8221; The Greek word means literally, &#8220;to lean out from.&#8221; The word here refers to the act of bending aside from one&#8217;s path at the approach of evil. \u2014 Wuest, page 87.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In verses 10-12, Peter is quoting from <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3962\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 34<\/span><\/a>. We find it of interest, however, that he didn&#8217;t quote the passage in its entirety. Instead, he rightly divided the Word of truth. Peter ended the quote accordingly, &#8220;the face of the Lord is against them that do evil &#8230;&#8221; But the Psalmist went on to declare, &#8220;to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3962\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 34:16b<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">You see, Peter understood that the Mystery given to the Apostle Paul interrupted the day of God&#8217;s Judgment, when He will judge the evil deeds of men (2 Peter 3:3-10, 15-18). Hear me and hear me well, God is not slack concerning His promises. He always honors His Word, both to the saved and the unsaved.
