33<\/sup> Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

34<\/sup> And He said, \u201cWhere have you laid him?\u201d They said to Him, \u201cLord, come and see.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

35<\/sup> Jesus wept.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

36<\/sup> Then the Jews said, \u201cSee how He loved him!\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

37<\/sup> And some of them said, \u201cCould not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

38<\/sup> Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

troubles (v. 33) = The outward expression of His inward emotion \u2014 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses … (Hebrews 4:15<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/em> Jesus was sympathizing with the sorrow of His friends.<\/h3>\n

weeping (v. 33) = loud lament<\/h3>\n

Where have you laid him? (v. 34) \u2014 Jesus knew, but He never made a show of His omniscience.<\/h3>\n

wept (v. 35) = silent weeping<\/h3>\n

Three times Jesus wept \u2014 each time over the consequences of sin. He is\u00a0… a\u00a0Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3). \u2014 <\/span>Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep (Romans 12:15<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

    Could not this Man (v. 37) \u2014 sarcasm \u2014\u00a0 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls (Hebrews 12:3<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

    Jesus’s groaning (v. 38) may have included indignation at the chaos caused by sin and the lack of faith surrounding Him.<\/h3>\n
