{"id":766,"date":"2010-01-22T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=766"},"modified":"2022-01-18T10:48:14","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T16:48:14","slug":"john-1117-27","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=766","title":{"rendered":"John 11:17-27"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>17<\/sup>So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">18<\/sup>Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off; <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">19<\/sup>and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">20<\/sup>Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">21<\/sup>Martha then said to Jesus, &#8220;Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">22<\/sup>&#8220;Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">23<\/sup>Jesus said to her, &#8220;Your brother will rise again.&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">24<\/sup>Martha said to Him, &#8220;I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">25<\/sup>Jesus said to her, &#8220;I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">26<\/sup>and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">27<\/sup>She said to Him, &#8220;Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>In addition to family and friends (v. 19), there were probably professional mourners (Mark 5:38) according to rabbinical law.<\/h3>\n<h3>Martha, consistent with her temperament (v. 20), rushed out to meet Jesus. Mary, consistent with hers, sat still.<\/h3>\n<h3>Martha&#8217;s words (v. 21) show faith, disappointment, and a touch of reproach (or at least evidence that she underestimated His power), but she <u><strong>knew<\/strong><\/u>. Like Abraham in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=300\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 4:18<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>God will give You (v. 22) Martha considered Jesus to have little more power than a prophet.<\/h3>\n<h3>Martha looked to an event (v. 24), the resurrection. Jesus told her to look to Him, a person. He <strong><u>is<\/u><\/strong> the resurrection.<\/h3>\n<h3>will never die (v. 26) \u2014 won&#8217;t experience the death that lasts forever. For the believer, eternal life is now.<\/h3>\n<h3>I have believed (v. 27) = I have believed and continue to believe. She didn&#8217;t fully believe. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=772\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 11:39<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n<h3>The greatest evidence that Jesus was who He said He was took place two miles from Jerusalem. The Jewish leaders had no excuse for their unbelief.
