For which of those works do you stone Me?\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33<\/sup> The Jews answered Him, saying, \u201cFor a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34<\/sup> Jesus answered them, \u201cIs it not written in your law, \u2018I said, \u201cYou are gods\u201d\u2019? <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35<\/sup> If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36<\/sup> do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, \u2018You are blaspheming,\u2019 because I said, \u2018I am the Son of God\u2019? <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37<\/sup> If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38<\/sup> but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39<\/sup> Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40<\/sup> And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41<\/sup> Then many came to Him and said, \u201cJohn performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42<\/sup> And many believed in Him there.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>They didn&#8217;t stone Him for His works (public ministry). They knew He did no wrong (v. 32).<\/h3>\n<h3>You are gods (v. 34) Those who receive power from God and act in His authority are called <u>g<\/u>ods (Psalm 82:6; Exodus 7:1). So why did they call Him, who was set apart by God for a special purpose, a blasphemer for Saying He was the Son of God? God will judge the <u>g<\/u>ods for ruling unjustly.<\/h3>\n<h3>Scripture cannot be broken (v. 35) \u2014 every word is true.<\/h3>\n<h3>know (revelation) and believe (continuous knowledge) (v.38)<\/h3>\n<h3>The Father is in Me, and I in Him (v. 38)\u00a0\u2014 essential oneness<\/h3>\n<h3>Some say Jesus never claimed to be God, but the Jews (v. 39) understood what He was saying.<\/h3>\n<h3>He escaped miraculously (v. 39).<\/h3>\n<h3>beyond the Jordan (v. 40) \u2014 where His ministry began<\/h3>\n<h3>Christ&#8217;s argument in these verses is two-fold. First, they accepted Psalms as of divine authority and had no problem with men being called gods who receive divine communication. So, why were they offended when He called Himself the Son of God when it was obvious that He was sent by the Father?
