class=\"text Ps-97-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let the multitude of isles be glad!<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15481\" class=\"text Ps-97-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Clouds and darkness surround Him;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15482\" class=\"text Ps-97-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>A fire goes before Him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And burns up His enemies round about.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15483\" class=\"text Ps-97-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>His lightnings light the world;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The earth sees and trembles.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15484\" class=\"text Ps-97-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5 <\/sup>The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15485\" class=\"text Ps-97-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>The heavens declare His righteousness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And all the peoples see His glory.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15486\" class=\"text Ps-97-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Let all be put to shame who serve carved images,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Who boast of idols.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Worship Him, all you gods.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15487\" class=\"text Ps-97-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>Zion hears and is glad,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And the daughters of Judah rejoice<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Because of Your judgments, O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15488\" class=\"text Ps-97-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9 <\/sup>For You, <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, are most high above all the earth;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You are exalted far above all gods.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15489\" class=\"text Ps-97-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>You who love the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, hate evil!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He preserves the souls of His saints;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15490\" class=\"text Ps-97-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup>Light is sown for the righteous,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And gladness for the upright in heart.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15491\" class=\"text Ps-97-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12 <\/sup>Rejoice in the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, you righteous,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-97-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Though the Hebrew text of this psalm has no heading, early Jewish tradition (i.e., the Septuagint) attributes it to David.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This psalm continues and further develops the idea with which the previous psalm ended\u2014to wit: the coming of the divine King to permanently establish His kingdom on earth. As in the previous psalm, moreover, this look at God&#8217;s coming kingdom is intended with <em>specific<\/em> reference to the Son of God, as indicated by (1) the citation of verse 7b in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1623\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 1:6<\/span><\/a> with <em>direct<\/em> and <em>exclusive<\/em> application to Jesus, and (2) the clear references in this section to God&#8217;s presence\u2014the manifestation of which is, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=537\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 1:18<\/span><\/a>, always that of the Son of God. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 233-234.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This is the new song of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7342\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 96<\/span><\/a>, not new for heaven but new for earth.It sings of a new day for humanity\u2014a day of righteousness and peace and brother hood. It will dawn when God causes His First-Begotten to return to the earth on the millennial morn, and commands all the angels to worship Him (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1623\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 1:7<\/span><\/a>). In this quotation the Holy Spirit interprets the Psalm, and declares its God to be Messiah. \u2014 Williams, page 374.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The song pictures the gladness which will fill the world when Messiah is enthroned, His adversaries destroyed, and His people delivered. The &#8220;foundation&#8221; of that throne will be righteousness and judgment (v.2). The great islands of verse 1 figure the nations dwelling in the continents washed by the waters of the great oceans of the world. The previous psalm summons them to sin the song. Here they respond. \u2014 Williams, page 375.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">[The psalm] begins with a clear affirmation of universal rule over all Creation\u2014viz., &#8220;The LORD reigns&#8221; (more precisely &#8220;has been reigning&#8221;). The ensuing description of the features attending God&#8217;s manifest presence and the reaction thereto by the inanimate world itself parallels the phraseology of other passages referring either to (1) the display of His sovereign power in past history (i.e., verse 2a &#8220;Clouds and thick darkness,&#8221; to which compare Deuteronomy 4:11; 5:22: &#8220;Fire goes before Him,&#8221; to which compare Exodus 13:21; Leviticus 9:24, or (2) the future advent of the Son of God (i.e., verse 2b: &#8220;Righteousness and justice,&#8221; to which compare Isaiah 9:7; 11:4; Psalm 97:6: &#8220;All the peoples have seen [the &#8220;prophetic past tense&#8221;] His glory,&#8221; to which compare Isaiah 62:2) \u2014 Wechsler, page 234.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Verses 7-9 declare God&#8217;s authority over the &#8220;gods&#8221; (graven images and idols) of the Gentiles.
