the Most High<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15398\" class=\"text Ps-91-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2 <\/sup>I will say of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, \u201cHe is my refuge and my fortress;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My God, in Him I will trust.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15399\" class=\"text Ps-91-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And from the perilous pestilence.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15400\" class=\"text Ps-91-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>He shall cover you with His feathers,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And under His wings you shall take refuge;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">His truth shall be your shield and buckler.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15401\" class=\"text Ps-91-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5 <\/sup>You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor of the arrow that flies by day,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15402\" class=\"text Ps-91-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15403\" class=\"text Ps-91-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>A thousand may fall at your side,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And ten thousand at your right hand;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But it shall not come near you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15404\" class=\"text Ps-91-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>Only with your eyes shall you look,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And see the reward of the wicked.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15405\" class=\"text Ps-91-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Because you have made the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, who is my refuge,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Even the Most High, your dwelling place,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15406\" class=\"text Ps-91-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10 <\/sup>No evil shall befall you,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15407\" class=\"text Ps-91-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup>For He shall give His angels charge over you,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To keep you in all your ways.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15408\" class=\"text Ps-91-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12 <\/sup>In their hands they shall bear you up,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lest you dash your foot against a stone.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15409\" class=\"text Ps-91-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13 <\/sup>You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15410\" class=\"text Ps-91-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBecause he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will set him on high, because he has known My name.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15411\" class=\"text Ps-91-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15 <\/sup>He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will be with him in trouble;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will deliver him and honor him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15412\" class=\"text Ps-91-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16 <\/sup>With long life I will satisfy him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-91-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And show him My salvation.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Several of my commentaries claim this Psalm is simply promises of God to those who believe. Others believe it is Messianic. It has been attributed to Moses, David, and Solomon.<\/h3>\n<h3>Here&#8217;s Wechsler on the traditional view.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The source of one&#8217;s security is found, ultimately, not in one&#8217;s circumstances or personal ability, but in God\u2014to whom we are to take recourse not only in sporadic times of distress or need, but continually, as indicated by the opening reference to &#8220;He who dwells &#8230;&#8221; i.e., who sees himself, whether awake or asleep as being in the Lord, and hence protected by Him from any lasting harm, whether physical (i.e., the second death; Revelation 20:14) or spiritual (i.e., condemnation, corresponding to Paul&#8217;s qualification of those who are &#8220;in Christ&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=359\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 8:1<\/span><\/a>ff). \u2014 Wechsler, page 221.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The intimacy of being &#8220;in&#8221; God is poignantly emphasized by His reference to being with him (i.e., with the individual believer) in their trouble\u2014which promise is epitomized by Jesus, who not only partook in the sufferings common to humanity (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1650\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 2:14-18<\/span><\/a>), but continues to partake of suffering along with each individual in whom His spirit dwells (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=859\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 16:7<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2276\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 6:17<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1014\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:20<\/span><\/a>; 1 John 4:13). \u2014 Wechsler, page 223.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>I lean toward the Messianic view , especially since Satan certainly understood it to be a reference to Christ when he quoted it in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2707\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 4<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Outline:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">1 Faith and dependence\u2014The Messiah speaks (vs. 1-2)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">2 Hope and deliverance\u2014The Spirit speaks (vs. 3-13)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">3 Victory and happiness forever\u2014Jehovah speaks (vs.14-16)<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In the last three verses, God the Father is the speaker. He responds to the love and devotion of the Messiah, His Son, our Savior, with eight wonderful promises. They are as follows:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">1. I will deliver Him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">2. I will set Him on high.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">3. I will answer Him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">4. I will be with Him in trouble.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">5. I will deliver Him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">6. And honor Him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">7. With long life will I satisfy Him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">8. And will show Him My salvation.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">These promises bring to Him the resurrection and enthronement after His atonement for fallen man. The whole Psalm breathes the presence of the Spirit of the Messiah. Verses 11 and 12 were quoted by Satan in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2707\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 4:6<\/span><\/a> and applied to Christ, the Messiah. \u2014 Phillips, pages 198-199.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Williams agrees, but with a slightly different outline.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The previous Psalm having introduced the Wilderness, and contrasted the misery and happiness of travelers in it who trust self or God, this Psalm points to the one Man Who passed through it undefiled, unhurt, and trusting and living God in perfection. To Him the Holy Spirit speaks in verses 1, 3-8 and 10-13; of Him God speaks in verses 14-16; to the Holy Spirit the Messiah responds in verse 2; and to God He declares His trust in verse 9.
