{"id":705,"date":"2009-11-08T05:00:01","date_gmt":"2009-11-08T11:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=705"},"modified":"2022-01-15T10:59:03","modified_gmt":"2022-01-15T16:59:03","slug":"john-831-36","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=705","title":{"rendered":"John 8:31-36"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>31<\/sup> Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, \u201cIf you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32<\/sup> And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33<\/sup> They answered Him, \u201cWe are Abraham\u2019s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, \u2018You will be made free\u2019?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34<\/sup> Jesus answered them, \u201cMost assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35<\/sup> And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36<\/sup> Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>believed (v. 31) \u2014 Not true faith, just a certain acknowledgment of what Jesus was saying<\/h3>\n<h3>Christ is the Truth\u00a0(v.32)\u00a0and the key to all Truth of God. He alone can make us free of sin. <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2040\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Colossians 1:5<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>never been in bondage (v. 33) \u2014 This was a false boast. They were certainly in bondage to Rome \u2014 and to sin, pride and self-sufficiency<\/h3>\n<h3>whoever (v. 34) \u2014 <u>every<\/u> person in his or her natural condition.<\/h3>\n<h3>slave to sin (v. 34) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=337\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 6:12-23<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>slave does not abide in the house forever (v. 35) \u2014 a slave\/servant has no permanent standing, but once a son, always a son \u2014 <em>and<\/em> the Son of God has an eternal place in God&#8217;s family. The Jews claimed that they were the seed of Abraham and, therefore, in God&#8217;s family \u2014 but Jesus said that, just because they were Abraham&#8217;s natural descendants, that gave them no title to spiritual\u00a0 blessings.<\/h3>\n<h3>free indeed (v. 36) \u2014 only the Son can make us free from bondage to sin. <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To grant us that we,\u00a0being delivered from the hand of our enemies,\u00a0might serve Him without fear,\u00a0in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life (Luke 1:74-75).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\">Continuance in God&#8217;s Word is not a condition of discipleship, but a manifestation of it. <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us (1 John 2:19).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #009900;\">There are four things about themselves which are particularly hateful, because so humbling, to the unregenerate. First, that they are destitute of righteousness (Isaiah 64:6) and goodness (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=355\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 7:18<\/span><\/a>), and therefore &#8220;unclean&#8221; (Isaiah 64:6) and &#8220;vile&#8221; (Job 40:4). Second, that they are destitute of wisdom (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=278\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 3:11<\/span><\/a>) and therefore full of &#8220;vanity&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3999\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 39:5<\/span><\/a>) and &#8220;foolishness&#8221; (Proverbs 22:15). Third, that they are destitute of &#8220;strength&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=310\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 5:6<\/span><\/a>) and &#8220;power&#8221; (Isaiah 40:29), and therefore unable to do anything good of or from themselves (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=843\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 15:5<\/span><\/a>). Fourth, that they are destitute of freedom (Isaiah 61:1), and therefore in a state of bondage (2 Peter 2:19). \u2014 Pink, page 41<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #009900;\">Here is one thing which distinguishes the Christian from the non-Christian. The Christian sins, and sins daily; but the non-Christian does nothing but sin. The Christian sins, but he &#8230; does good works and brings forth the fruit of the Spirit.
