<\/span>I will sing of the mercies of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> forever;<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15329\" class=\"text Ps-89-2\" style=\"color: <\/sup>\u2018Your seed I will establish forever,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And build up your throne to all generations.\u2019 \u201d class=\"text Ps-89-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15335\" class=\"text Ps-89-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> God of hosts,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Who is mighty like You, O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Your faithfulness also surrounds You.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15336\" class=\"text Ps-89-9\" heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The world and all its fullness, You have founded style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15340\" class=\"text Ps-89-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13 <\/sup>You have a mighty arm;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15341\" class=\"text Ps-89-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14 <\/sup>Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-14\" walk, O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, in the light of Your countenance.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15343\" class=\"text Ps-89-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16 <\/sup>In Your name they rejoice all day long,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17 <\/sup>For You are the glory of their strength,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And in Your favor our horn is exalted.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15345\" class=\"text Ps-89-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18 <\/sup>For our shield belongs to the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And our king to the Holy One of Israel.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15346\" class=\"text Ps-89-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And said: \u201cI have given help to one who is mighty;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I have exalted one chosen from the people.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15347\" class=\"text Ps-89-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20 <\/sup>I have found My servant David;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">With My holy oil I have anointed him,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15348\" class=\"text Ps-89-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21 <\/sup>With whom My hand shall be established;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Also My arm shall strengthen him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15349\" class=\"text Ps-89-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22 <\/sup>The enemy shall not outwit him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15350\" class=\"text Ps-89-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23 <\/sup>I will beat down his foes before his face,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And plague those who hate him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15351\" class=\"text Ps-89-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And in My name his horn shall be exalted.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15352\" class=\"text Ps-89-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25 <\/sup>Also I will set his hand over the sea,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And his right hand over the rivers.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15353\" class=\"text Ps-89-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26 <\/sup>He shall cry to Me, \u2018You are my Father,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My God, and the rock of my salvation.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15354\" class=\"text Ps-89-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27 <\/sup>Also I will make him My firstborn,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The highest of the kings of the earth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15355\" class=\"text Ps-89-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28 <\/sup>My mercy I will keep for him forever,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And My covenant shall stand firm with him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15356\" class=\"text Ps-89-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29 <\/sup>His seed also I will make to endure forever,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And his throne as the days of heaven.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15357\" class=\"text Ps-89-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cIf his sons forsake My law<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And do not walk in My judgments,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15358\" class=\"text Ps-89-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31 <\/sup>If they break My statutes<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And do not keep My commandments,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15359\" class=\"text Ps-89-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32 <\/sup>Then I will punish their transgression with the rod,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their iniquity with stripes.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15360\" class=\"text Ps-89-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33 <\/sup>Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor allow My faithfulness to fail.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15361\" class=\"text Ps-89-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34 <\/sup>My covenant I will not break,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15362\" class=\"text Ps-89-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35 <\/sup>Once I have sworn by My holiness;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will not lie to David:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15363\" class=\"text Ps-89-36\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36 <\/sup>His seed shall endure forever,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-36\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And his throne as the sun before Me;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15364\" class=\"text Ps-89-37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37 <\/sup>It shall be established forever like the moon,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Even like the faithful witness in the sky.\u201d Selah<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15365\" class=\"text Ps-89-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>But You have cast off and abhorred,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have been furious with Your anointed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15366\" class=\"text Ps-89-39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39 <\/sup>You have renounced the covenant of Your servant;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15367\" class=\"text Ps-89-40\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40 <\/sup>You have broken down all his hedges;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-40\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have brought his strongholds to ruin.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15368\" class=\"text Ps-89-41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41 <\/sup>All who pass by the way plunder him;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He is a reproach to his neighbors.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15369\" class=\"text Ps-89-42\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42 <\/sup>You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-42\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have made all his enemies rejoice.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15370\" class=\"text Ps-89-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43 <\/sup>You have also turned back the edge of his sword,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And have not sustained him in the battle.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15371\" class=\"text Ps-89-44\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44 <\/sup>You have made his glory cease,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-44\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And cast his throne down to the ground.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15372\" class=\"text Ps-89-45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45 <\/sup>The days of his youth You have shortened;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have covered him with shame. Selah<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15373\" class=\"text Ps-89-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46\u00a0<\/sup>How long, <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Will You hide Yourself forever?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Will Your wrath burn like fire?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15374\" class=\"text Ps-89-47\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47 <\/sup>Remember how short my time is;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-47\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For what futility have You created all the children of men?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15375\" class=\"text Ps-89-48\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48 <\/sup>What man can live and not see death?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-89-48\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave? The heavens and the angels witness to His greatness (vs. 5-7). The earth and men also. All nature, the sea and the mountains, the north and the south, are conscious of His power. In His government the foundations are unshakable, and the method full of tenderness (vs. 8-14).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It follows naturally that the people who are peculiarly His own are blessed (vs. 15-18). This is not theory only; it is experience. For them Jehovah had found a king, and had made him and the people under him invincible in the days of their obedience. Such facts issue in confidence that the future must be one of victory and blessing. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;But,&#8221; and the word suggests a change, and a great change it is. instead of the glowing picture of the former verses is a dark one of present experience. The people are scattered, their defenses broken down, their enemies triumphant, and their king is robbed of glory, and covered with shame (vs. 38-45).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Yet most carefully\u00a0 notice that all this is spoken of as the work of Jehovah. The key phrase to this portion is &#8220;Thou hast.&#8221; The mighty One Who had found the king and blessed the nation is the One Who has broken the nation and cast out the king. Upon the basis of that conviction the final prayer rises, &#8220;How long, Jehovah.&#8221; \u2014 Morgan, page 166.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Ethan (intro) \u2014 on of the &#8220;first rank&#8221; Levitical singers appointed during the time of David\u2014mentioned in 1 Chronicles 15:17-19.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">God&#8217;s covenant with David (2 Samuel 7:8-17) is the topic of this psalm. The unconditionality and inevitable fulfillment of this covenant, as grounded in God&#8217;s &#8220;lovingkindness&#8221; and &#8220;faithfulness,&#8221; is underscored by the seven-fold repetition (seven signifying perfection\/completion) of each of these words. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 216-217.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>I have made (v.3) \u2014 the covenant depended on God alone, making it unconditional<\/h3>\n<h3>seed (v.4) \u2014 Christ (Acts 13:22-23)<\/h3>\n<h3>Rahab (v.10) \u2014 Egypt, as in Psalm 87:4.<\/h3>\n<h3>Tabor and Hermon (v.12) \u2014 mountains in Israel<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Because of the manner in which God established His covenant with David, there can be no doubt (vs.15-29) that He will keep it for him forever. &#8230; Even for those who forsake God&#8217;s law (v.30), He will hold true to His covenant, and chastise rather than reject them. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 217-218.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>horn (v.17) \u2014 symbolizing strength<\/h3>\n<h3>shield (v.18) \u2014 representing the king as protector of the people<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Lord recalls His vow to overthrow David&#8217;s foes (vs. 21-23), extend his dominions (vs.24-25), exalt his sovereignty (vs. 26-27), and establish his kingdom forever (vs.28-37). \u2014 Guthrie, page 507.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Based on what God says to David in 2 Samuel 7:14-15, God here reiterates, through the psalmist, His promise to chastise\u2014nor <em>forsake<\/em>\u2014those sons of David (i.e., male descendants in the royal line, &#8220;son&#8221; in Hebrew signifying any male descendant) who, for their part, forsake His law by violating His statutes and commandments (vs. 30-31, referring to His standards of righteousness as represented in the Mosaic Law). To these, at the time of their chastisement, it may seem as if God as cast off and rejected them (v.38), though the very fact of His chastising them proves that He has not. \u2014 Wechsler, page 218.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">[Beginning at v.30] is in the form of a warning, not only to David and his offspring, but to all Israel. They are warned that if they live ungodly lives and trespass His holy commandments, He will punish them for it, and yet He will overrule so that in spite of the way David&#8217;s sons may live, Messiah will come through that line. \u2014 Phillips, page 185.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Let it be remembered that this is a prophecy of what many Jews will do, and say, from the fall of the last king of Israel right down to the end of the Tribulation. It is not God&#8217;s will for them to speak as they do, but God, fore-knowing what they would do, had [the psalmist] record it. &#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Israel was so deep in sin that God had to do something about it (2 Chronicles 36:15-16; Ezekiel 21:25-27). &#8230; These Scriptures give the reason why Israel is without a king, and why she will continue to be without one, until she repents and Messiah comes. He is the one &#8220;whose right it is&#8221; to occupy the throne of David and no one else. &#8230; God will carry out His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and then to David, but Israel and the world will go through some very deep waters of trouble before either of them &#8230; come to the place where God can bless them and fulfill the promises. [Which He WILL do.] \u2014 Phillips, page 187-188.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Williams&#8217; take:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Messiah in the confidence of coronation and the fulfillment of the sure promises made to Him as David (Isaiah 55:3; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1541\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 13:34<\/span><\/a>) recites these promises (vs. 2-4), voices the lament of His people at their seeming breach (vs. 38-51), but closes the Psalm as He began it with praise to Jehovah (vs. 1 and 52).
