Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">27<\/sup>Howbeit we know this man whence He is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence He is. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">28<\/sup>Then cried Jesus in the temple as He taught, saying, Ye both know Me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of Myself, but He that sent Me is true, whom ye know not. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">29<\/sup>But I know Him: for I am from Him, and He hath sent Me. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">30<\/sup>Then they sought to take Him: but no man laid hands on Him, because His hour was not yet come. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">31<\/sup>And many of the people believed on Him, and said, When Christ cometh, will He do more miracles than these which this man hath done?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Earlier (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=680\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 20<\/span><\/a>), some who came from elsewhere denied anyone sought to kill Jesus, but now the locals knew it was true.<\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus spoke openly, but the rulers did nothing. Had the rulers decided Jesus was the Christ? (verse 26) In Greek, the question expects &#8220;no&#8221; for an answer.<\/h3>\n<h3>They said He couldn&#8217;t be Christ because they knew He came from Nazareth (v.27).<\/h3>\n<h3>No man knoweth whence He is (verse 27) \u2014 Jesus responds, not with <u>where<\/u> He was from, but with <u>whom<\/u> He was from. Also, it was prophesied that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. That&#8217;s not what they probably meant. They probably referred to the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14).<\/h3>\n<h3>cried (verse 28) = spoke in a loud voice. (Isaiah 42:2 speaks of His general character \u2014 <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, nor cause His voice to be heard in the street<\/span><\/em>.)<\/h3>\n<h3>They knew some facts about Him, but not of His virgin birth or deity.<\/h3>\n<h3>I am from Him (verse 29)\u00a0\u2014 a proclamation of deity. <u>Then<\/u> they were ready to kill Him. They couldn&#8217;t touch Him \u2014 proof that, when His hour came, He laid down His life.<\/h3>\n<h3>Many believed (verse 31) \u2014 that He was Messiah, but not for salvation.
