25<\/sup>Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this He, whom they seek to kill? <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a026<\/sup>But, lo, He speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a027<\/sup>Howbeit we know this man whence He is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence He is. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a028<\/sup>Then cried Jesus in the temple as He taught, saying, Ye both know Me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of Myself, but He that sent Me is true, whom ye know not. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a029<\/sup>But I know Him: for I am from Him, and He hath sent Me. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a030<\/sup>Then they sought to take Him: but no man laid hands on Him, because His hour was not yet come. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a031<\/sup>And many of the people believed on Him, and said, When Christ cometh, will He do more miracles than these which this man hath done?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

Earlier (verse 20<\/span><\/a>), some who came from elsewhere denied anyone sought to kill Jesus, but now the locals knew it was true.<\/h3>\n

Jesus spoke openly, but the rulers did nothing. Had the rulers decided Jesus was the Christ? (verse 26) In Greek, the question expects “no” for an answer.<\/h3>\n

They said He couldn’t be Christ because they knew He came from Nazareth (v.27).<\/h3>\n

No man knoweth whence He is (verse 27) \u2014 Jesus responds, not with where<\/u> He was from, but with whom<\/u> He was from. Also, it was prophesied that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. That’s not what they probably meant. They probably referred to the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14).<\/h3>\n

cried (verse 28) = spoke in a loud voice. (Isaiah 42:2 speaks of His general character \u2014 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, nor cause His voice to be heard in the street<\/span><\/em>.)<\/h3>\n

They knew some facts about Him, but not of His virgin birth or deity.<\/h3>\n

I am from Him (verse 29)\u00a0\u2014 a proclamation of deity. Then<\/u> they were ready to kill Him. They couldn’t touch Him \u2014 proof that, when His hour came, He laid down His life.<\/h3>\n

Many believed (verse 31) \u2014 that He was Messiah, but not for salvation. They waited to see if He would perform more miracles.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
