{"id":666,"date":"2009-09-15T05:00:50","date_gmt":"2009-09-15T11:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=666"},"modified":"2022-01-13T10:28:48","modified_gmt":"2022-01-13T16:28:48","slug":"john-647-51","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=666","title":{"rendered":"John 6:47-51"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">48 I am that bread of life. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Manna kept the Jews fed in the wilderness, but those who ate it eventually died. The bread of life enables men to live forever. Manna didn&#8217;t even get the fathers into the promised land because they would not believe.<\/h3>\n<h3>Bread that I <u>will<\/u> give (v.51) \u2014 referring to Jesus&#8217; death. It is His flesh, His body. The bread is <u>not<\/u> Jesus&#8217; teaching or His example.<\/h3>\n<h3>hath eternal life (v.47) \u2014 present tense \u2014 not a future event<\/h3>\n<h3>eat (v.50) \u2014 assimilate it, make it part of one&#8217;s life.<\/h3>\n<h3>dead (v.49) \u2014 physically<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\">die (v.50) \u2014 spiritually<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #009900;\">&#8220;I am that bread of life&#8221; (6:48). This is the first of the seven &#8220;I am&#8221; titles of Christ found in this Gospel, and found nowhere else. The others are, &#8220;I am the light of the world&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=697\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">8:12<\/span><\/a>); &#8220;I am the door&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=739\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10:9<\/span><\/a>); &#8220;I am the good shepherd&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=746\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10:11<\/span><\/a>); &#8220;I am the resurrection and the life&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=766\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11:25<\/span><\/a>); &#8220;I am the way, the truth, and the life&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=827\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">14:6<\/span><\/a>); &#8220;I am the true vine&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=843\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">15:1<\/span><\/a>). They all look back to that memorable occasion when God appeared to Moses at the burning bush, and bade him go down into Egypt, communicate with His people, interview Pharaoh, and command him to let the children of God go forth into the wilderness to worship Jehovah. And when Moses asked, Who shall I say hath sent me?, the answer was, &#8220;Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you&#8221; (Exodus 3:14).
