class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-78-1\">1 Give ear, O my people, to my law;<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15116\" class=\"text Ps-78-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2 <\/sup>I will open my mouth in a parable;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I will utter dark sayings of old,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15117\" class=\"text Ps-78-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>Which we have heard and known,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And our fathers have told us.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15118\" class=\"text Ps-78-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>We will not hide them from their children,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Telling to the generation to come the praises of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15119\" class=\"text Ps-78-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>For He established a testimony in Jacob,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And appointed a law in Israel,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Which He commanded our fathers,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">That they should make them known to their children;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15120\" class=\"text Ps-78-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>That the generation to come might know them,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The children who would be born,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">That they may arise and declare them to their children,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15121\" class=\"text Ps-78-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7 <\/sup>That they may set their hope in God,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And not forget the works of God,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But keep His commandments;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15122\" class=\"text Ps-78-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>And may not be like their fathers,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A stubborn and rebellious generation,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A generation that did not set its heart aright,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And whose spirit was not faithful to God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15123\" class=\"text Ps-78-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>The children of Ephraim, being armed and\u00a0carrying bows,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Turned back in the day of battle.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15124\" class=\"text Ps-78-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10 <\/sup>They did not keep the covenant of God;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They refused to walk in His law,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15125\" class=\"text Ps-78-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup>And forgot His works<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And His wonders that He had shown them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15126\" class=\"text Ps-78-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15127\" class=\"text Ps-78-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13 <\/sup>He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And He made the waters stand up like a heap.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15128\" class=\"text Ps-78-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14 <\/sup>In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And all the night with a light of fire.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15129\" class=\"text Ps-78-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15 <\/sup>He split the rocks in the wilderness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15130\" class=\"text Ps-78-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16 <\/sup>He also brought streams out of the rock,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And caused waters to run down like rivers.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15131\" class=\"text Ps-78-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>But they sinned even more against Him<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15132\" class=\"text Ps-78-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18 <\/sup>And they tested God in their heart<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">By asking for the food of their fancy.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15133\" class=\"text Ps-78-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19 <\/sup>Yes, they spoke against God:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They said, \u201cCan God prepare a table in the wilderness?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15134\" class=\"text Ps-78-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20 <\/sup>Behold, He struck the rock,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">So that the waters gushed out,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And the streams overflowed.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Can He give bread also?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Can He provide meat for His people?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15135\" class=\"text Ps-78-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> heard this and was furious;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">So a fire was kindled against Jacob,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And anger also came up against Israel,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15136\" class=\"text Ps-78-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22 <\/sup>Because they did not believe in God,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And did not trust in His salvation.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15137\" class=\"text Ps-78-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23 <\/sup>Yet He had commanded the clouds above,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And opened the doors of heaven,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15138\" class=\"text Ps-78-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24 <\/sup>Had rained down manna on them to eat,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And given them of the bread of heaven.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15139\" class=\"text Ps-78-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25 <\/sup>Men ate angels\u2019 food;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He sent them food to the full.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15140\" class=\"text Ps-78-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And by His power He brought in the south wind.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15141\" class=\"text Ps-78-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27 <\/sup>He also rained meat on them like the dust,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15142\" class=\"text Ps-78-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28 <\/sup>And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">All around their dwellings.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15143\" class=\"text Ps-78-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29 <\/sup>So they ate and were well filled,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For He gave them their own desire.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15144\" class=\"text Ps-78-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30 <\/sup>They were not deprived of their craving;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But while their food was still in their mouths,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15145\" class=\"text Ps-78-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31 <\/sup>The wrath of God came against them,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And slew the stoutest of them,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And struck down the choice men of Israel.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15146\" class=\"text Ps-78-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>In spite of this they still sinned,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And did not believe in His wondrous works.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15147\" class=\"text Ps-78-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33 <\/sup>Therefore their days He consumed in futility,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their years in fear.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15148\" class=\"text Ps-78-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>When He slew them, then they sought Him;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And they returned and sought earnestly for God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15149\" class=\"text Ps-78-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35 <\/sup>Then they remembered that God was their rock,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And the Most High God their Redeemer.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15150\" class=\"text Ps-78-36\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36 <\/sup>Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-36\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And they lied to Him with their tongue;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15151\" class=\"text Ps-78-37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37 <\/sup>For their heart was not steadfast with Him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor were they faithful in His covenant.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15152\" class=\"text Ps-78-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38 <\/sup>But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And did not destroy them.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Yes, many a time He turned His anger away,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And did not stir up all His wrath;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15153\" class=\"text Ps-78-39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39 <\/sup>For He remembered that they were but flesh,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A breath that passes away and does not come again.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15154\" class=\"text Ps-78-40\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>How often they provoked Him in the wilderness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-40\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And grieved Him in the desert!<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15155\" class=\"text Ps-78-41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41 <\/sup>Yes, again and again they tempted God,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And limited the Holy One of Israel.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15156\" class=\"text Ps-78-42\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42 <\/sup>They did not remember His power:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-42\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15157\" class=\"text Ps-78-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43 <\/sup>When He worked His signs in Egypt,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And His wonders in the field of Zoan;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15158\" class=\"text Ps-78-44\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44 <\/sup>Turned their rivers into blood,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-44\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their streams, that they could not drink.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15159\" class=\"text Ps-78-45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45 <\/sup>He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And frogs, which destroyed them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15160\" class=\"text Ps-78-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46 <\/sup>He also gave their crops to the caterpillar,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their labor to the locust.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15161\" class=\"text Ps-78-47\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47 <\/sup>He destroyed their vines with hail,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-47\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their sycamore trees with frost.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15162\" class=\"text Ps-78-48\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48 <\/sup>He also gave up their cattle to the hail,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-48\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their flocks to fiery lightning.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15163\" class=\"text Ps-78-49\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49 <\/sup>He cast on them the fierceness of His anger,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-49\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wrath, indignation, and trouble,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-49\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">By sending angels of destruction among them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-15164\" class=\"text Ps-78-50\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50 <\/sup>He made a path for His anger;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-50\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He did not spare their soul from death,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-78-50\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But gave their life over to the plague,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span Jehovah, who is Israel&#8217;s Sanctuary in Egypt, in the Desert, and in the Land, was dishonored in all three periods of the nation&#8217;s history, and it predicts His election of Mount Zion for His #008000;\">The purpose of the psalm is to rehearse the early story of the nation that future generations might be warned against a repetition of past failures (<a Writing some time after the leadership of the nation had passed from the Ephramite house of Saul to the Judahite house of David &#8230; \u2014 Guthrie, page 500.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verses 78:1-4 \u2014 In this opening section the psalmist describes what he will go on to say in the following two sections as a parable and ambiguous sayings (or &#8220;riddles&#8221; [&#8220;dark sayings&#8221; does not denote something sinister or negative]\u2014not because the meaning of his words, or the overall theme to which they lead, is unclear, but because that meaning will only be clear to those who have the spiritual capacity. &#8230; It is precisely for this reason that verse 2 is cited (in paraphrase) in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2933\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 13:35<\/span><\/a> to describe Christ&#8217;s consistent teaching in parables\u2014i.e., as Christ elsewhere explains, citing Isaiah 6:9-10: that those who have been saved might receive greater understanding of God&#8217;s Word, and that the understanding of those who have not been saved might be increasingly &#8220;taken away&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2897\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 13:10-17<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Wechsler, pages 194-195.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verses 5-64 \u2014 This large section is parallel to (and quite likely the exemplar for) Stephen&#8217;s &#8220;defense&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1405\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 7:2-53<\/span><\/a>, the point in both cases being to review the record of God&#8217;s undiminished paternal solicitude for the consistently rebellious people whom He had chosen as His national &#8220;son.&#8221; Like Asaph in the present psalm, Stephen also focuses his review on the early generations of Israel (esp. in the wilderness), highlighting their culminating expressions of sin and God&#8217;s responsive chastisement, and concluding with God&#8217;s gracious establishment of the Davidic monarchy and the building of the Temple in Jerusalem. \u2014 Wechsler, page 195.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Ephraim (vs. 9, 67) \u2014 The tribe of Ephraim lead the rebellion and disloyalty to God that cursed the nation and so the tribe is used to represent the entire nation. A couple of commentaries state that the turning back isn&#8217;t a reference to a battle, but refers to turning away from God. One says that Ephraim led the refusal to enter the land after the exodus.<\/h3>\n<h3>Zoan (v.12) \u2014 An ancient capital of Egypt, here used as a poetic parallel of Egypt itself.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">To test God (vs. 18-19) is not the same as simply asking for signs, but rather to challenge Him to do what one believes Him to be unable to do. \u2014 Guthrie, page 500.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Divine title in verse 21 is Jehovah, in verse 59, Elohim. &#8230; These changes of title are designed. Jehovah expressed covenant relationship; Elohim, creation relationship. God did not forsake them in the Wilderness (Nehemiah 9:17) but He did forsake them in the land (v.60). \u2014 Williams, page 361.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">A comparison of verses 40-42 with verses 8-11 shows that the hearts of the children were as the hearts of the fathers. They were self willed (verses 40 with verse 8), they turned back (verse 41 with verse 9), they forgot (verse 42 with verse 11).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The power, forgiveness and patience which God showed to the fathers He showed also to the children; and accordingly verses 43-51 correspond to and develop verse 12, and verses 13-16 correspond to and develop verses 52-54. \u2014 Williams, page 361.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Seven plagues are detailed in verses 44-48 and 50 and 51, and three intimated in verse 49. The order in Exodus is historic; here it is moral. \u2014 Williams, page 361.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Ham (v.51) \u2014 the son of Noah from whom the Egyptians descended.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The history detailed in verses 60-64 is that of 1 Samuel 4. The Ark, symbol of God&#8217;s &#8220;strength&#8221; and &#8220;glory,&#8221; was captured by the Philistines (v.61; there was a great slaughter among the people (v.62); Hophni and Phinehas fell by the sword (v.64); and their widows made no lamentation for, Phinehas&#8217; wife when dying bewailed the loss of the Ark more than the loss of her husband. \u2014 Williams, page 361.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Shiloh (v.60) \u2014 the sanctuary where Eli served.
