{"id":628,"date":"2009-07-31T05:00:57","date_gmt":"2009-07-31T11:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1002things.com\/?p=628"},"modified":"2022-01-11T08:35:29","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T14:35:29","slug":"john-519-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=628","title":{"rendered":"John 5:19-23"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth Him all things that Himself doeth: and He will show Him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom He will. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">23 That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>The Son can do nothing of Himself. This isn&#8217;t a limitation but a statement of the perfect unity between the Father and the Son. He is not a separate God. His will is identical with the Father&#8217;s. The Son does what the Father does and He does it as the Father does (in accordance with the absolute perfection of their common Divine nature) <u>and<\/u> He does <u>all<\/u> the Father does.<\/h3>\n<h3>The Father shows the Son. There are no secrets, no restraint and a complete equality of intelligence.<\/h3>\n<h3>The Son isn&#8217;t doing similar things as the Father, but the <u>same<\/u> things. None of the three Persons of the Godhead can act apart from the others.<\/h3>\n<h3>Only God has power over life and death. The Son has these powers because of His sovereignty, not by commission. He gives life &#8220;to whom He <u>will<\/u>.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>The theme of verse 19 is expanded in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=636\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 30<\/span><\/a>. Jesus&#8217; first recorded statement in Luke 2:49 (&#8230; <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">How is it that ye sought Me? wist ye not that I must be about My Father&#8217;s business?<\/span><\/em>) echoes verse 19.<\/h3>\n<h3>seeth (v. 19) \u2014 to perceive, to know. What He knows, the Father does.<\/h3>\n<h3>greater works (v. 20) \u2014 the cross and Christ&#8217;s resurrection, the giving of life to the dead, His judgment &#8230;<\/h3>\n<h3>The Son gives life (v. 21) \u2014 He is equal to the Father in sovereign ability and rights.<\/h3>\n<h3>judgment (v. 22) \u2014 all future judgment, including the Judgment Seat (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4977\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 5:10<\/span><\/a>), the judgment of the nations, Judgment of earth (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1709\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 17:31<\/span><\/a>) and the Great White Throne Judgment.<\/h3>\n<h3>honor the Son (v. 23) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2842\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 10:40<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=802\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 12:44-45<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>Verse 23 targets the very elders whom Jesus was talking to. They claimed to honor God but were persecuting the Son.
