To bring to remembrance.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-70-1\">1 Make haste, O God, to deliver me!<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Make haste to help me, O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>!<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14974\" class=\"text Ps-70-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Let them be ashamed and confounded<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Who seek my life;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let them be turned back and confused<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Who desire my hurt.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14975\" class=\"text Ps-70-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>Let them be turned back because of their shame,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Who say, \u201cAha, aha!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14976\" class=\"text Ps-70-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And let those who love Your salvation say continually,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cLet God be magnified!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14977\" class=\"text Ps-70-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>But I am poor and needy;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Make haste to me, O God!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You are my help and my deliverer;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-70-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">O <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, do not delay.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Just like <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4018\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalms 42 and 43<\/span><\/a>, Psalms 70 and 71 constitute a single cohesive unit (and, originally, perhaps, a single psalm), as indicated by the observations that (1) the first three verses of Psalm 71 are the same (with minor variations) as the first three verses of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3934\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 31<\/span><\/a>, which is explicitly attributed to David (see also the clear parallels between 71:5-6 and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3877\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">22:9-11<\/span><\/a>); (2) Psalm 71 is the only psalm in Book Two (Psalms 42-72) without a heading1\u2014except for <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4018\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 43<\/span><\/a>, which is clearly &#8220;of a piece&#8221; with <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4018\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 42<\/span><\/a>; and (3) in a few old Hebrew manuscripts these two psalms are presented as one. The reason for distinguishing Psalm 70 as a separate psalm my well be due to the fact that it represents an iteration, with minor variations, of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4005\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 40:11-17<\/span><\/a>. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 180-181.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">[In Psalm 70]\u2014which represents an iteration of the last section of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4005\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 40<\/span><\/a>\u2014David implores God&#8217;s speedy help, picking up on the idea with which he began the last section of the previous psalm\u2014i.e., that he is afflicted and needy (v.5, to which cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6248\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 69:29<\/span><\/a>: &#8220;I am afflicted and suffering pain&#8221;) and that God alone is his help and deliverer (to which cf. also his parallel ending in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3992\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 38:22<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Wechsler, page 181.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Aha (v.3) = lit. &#8220;our desire!&#8221;\u2014so would we have it.<\/h3>\n<h3>Williams&#8217; take:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The purpose of this Psalm is to animate the courage and sustain the faith of the remnant of Jacob in their future day of trouble by remembering the sufferings of the Divine Son of David predicted in Psalm 40 and recorded in the Gospels. &#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Remnant, hated and oppressed by their future enemies, will use this Psalm: and calling to remembrance the similar hatred suffered by their Messiah, will, like Him, and animated by His Spirit in them wait patiently for Jehovah to deliver them out of their distresses: being assured that the Elohim who delivered Him will deliver them.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">As throughout the Psalms so here, Christ makes Himself one with the redeemed and prays for them as if for Himself. \u2014 Williams, page 354.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
