{"id":620,"date":"2009-07-19T05:00:11","date_gmt":"2009-07-19T11:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1002things.com\/?p=620"},"modified":"2022-01-11T08:20:21","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T14:20:21","slug":"john-51-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=620","title":{"rendered":"John 5:1-4"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>feast of the Jews (v. 1) \u2014 John did not refer to the feast as Jehovah&#8217;s feast because it was just an outward religious ceremony. The feast was probably Pentecost, one of three annual feasts for which Jewish males were required to travel to Jerusalem.<\/h3>\n<h3>sheep gate (v. 2 \u2014 Nehemiah 3:1) \u2014 The gate through which sacrificial animals were brought to the temple.<\/h3>\n<h3>Bethesda (v. 2) = house of mercy<\/h3>\n<h3>The last clause in verse 3 and all of verse 4 are not in the earliest manuscripts and were probably added later by someone other than John.<\/h3>\n<h3>If verse 4 wasn&#8217;t written by John (and it has always bothered me some) \u2014 There was probably a superstition that when the spring bubbled, the first one in would be healed.
