{"id":6195,"date":"2022-02-25T19:27:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-26T01:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6195"},"modified":"2023-03-20T15:58:03","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T21:58:03","slug":"2-thessalonians-31-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6195","title":{"rendered":"2 Thessalonians 3:1-5"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text 2Thess-3-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29681\" class=\"text 2Thess-3-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29682\" class=\"text 2Thess-3-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29683\" class=\"text 2Thess-3-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29684\" class=\"text 2Thess-3-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Finally (v.1) = lit. &#8220;for the rest,&#8221; not necessarily implying that the letter is drawing to a close, but marking a transition in the subject matter.<\/h3>\n<h3>may run (v.1) \u2014 indicating free and rapid progress<\/h3>\n<h3>glorified, just as it is with you (v.1) \u2014 Paul was probably referring to the effectiveness of the word in turning men to Christ, as it had with the Thessalonians (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4148\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 1:6-10<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">that we may be delivered (v.2) \u2014 The apostle &#8230; had already received the divine assurance of personal safety while he remained in Corinth [but that] did not make him independent of the prayers of the saints to this very end. The knowledge of God&#8217;s will and purpose does not render prayer superfluous. \u2014 Vine, page 131.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">At Corinth &#8230; a concerted effort was made by the Jews of the synagogue, to have [Paul] condemned by the Roman proconsul and cast into prison, so as to restrain his testimony. It is interesting to notice, however, that Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue when Paul departed to the Gentiles, <em>and<\/em> Sosthenes, the next chief ruler, who was so soundly beaten before Gallio&#8217;s court, <em>both<\/em> evidently came to trust in Christ (See <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1724\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 18:8<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1847\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">17<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2191\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 1:1<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Stam, page 138.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>unreasonable (v.2) = lit., &#8220;out of place,&#8221; perverse, capable of outrageous conduct. Referring to their behavior<\/h3>\n<h3>evil (v.2) = malignant, bad in influence and effect. Referring to their character. In Greek, it would read &#8220;these unreasonable and wicked men,&#8221; indicating that Paul had particular men or a particular class of men in mind, and that the Thessalonians would understand who they were\u2014almost always the Jews.<\/h3>\n<h3>not all have faith (v.2) \u2014 in the sense of &#8220;few do&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>In Greek, the end of v.2 and beginning of v.3 reads, &#8220;Not all have faith, faithful, however, is the Lord,&#8221; emphasizing the contrast between faithless men and the faithful God.<\/h3>\n<h3>establish you (v.3) \u2014 Paul had been talking about himself, but now returned to his readers.<\/h3>\n<h3>the evil one (v.3) \u2014 Satan, who opposes the gospel<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">confidence in the Lord concerning you (v.4) \u2014 It seems clear that the meaning is &#8220;we have confidence in you, not indeed because of any natural stability of character but because of your relationship with the Lord, the sufficient source of power for all His people.&#8221; \u2014 Vine, page 132.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>the things we command you (v.4) \u2014 Probably not the things he was just referring to (prayer) but the things he had told them when he was with them. As an apostle, Paul had the authority to command.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paul was confident the Thessalonians were already doing what he commanded even though he was gone. Compare this to how Moses predicted after <i>he\u00a0<\/i>left, that the Israelites would cease to obey (Deuteronomy 31:217-29), and that was the pattern under the Law (Judges 2:18-19). Under grace, God\u2019s people do \u201cmuch more\u201d in the absence of a spiritual authority (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1169\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Philippians 2:12<\/span><\/a>). There are commands under grace,\u00a0<i>Pauline\u00a0<\/i>commands (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2457\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 14:37<\/span><\/a>). Paul makes over 600 imperative command statements, some of which sound like the ten commandments (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4225\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 4:2-3<\/span><\/a>), of which he repeats 9 of the 10. \u2014 Kurth<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>direct (v.5) = make straight<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">While a too rigid exegesis is to be avoided, it may be permissible to paraphrase: &#8220;the Lord teach and enable you to love as God loves, and to be patient as Christ is patient (v.5).&#8221; \u2014 Vine, page 132.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It is highly significant that in all of Paul&#8217;s epistles he never once mentions his deep love for God or for the Lord Jesus Christ.
