And they came to the land of Goshen.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1416\" class=\"text Gen-46-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>So Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1417\" class=\"text Gen-46-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>And Israel said to Joseph, \u201cNow let me die, since I have seen your face, because you are still alive.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1418\" class=\"text Gen-46-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father\u2019s household, \u201cI will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, \u2018My brothers and those of my father\u2019s house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1419\" class=\"text Gen-46-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>And the men are shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1420\" class=\"text Gen-46-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, \u2018What is your occupation?\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1421\" class=\"text Gen-46-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>that you shall say, \u2018Your servants\u2019 occupation has been with livestock from our youth even till now, both we and also our fathers,\u2019 that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">As the Israelites approached Egypt, they knew they would be stopping in Goshen, according to Joseph&#8217;s instructions (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5851\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 45:10<\/span><\/a>), whereas Joseph&#8217;s headquarters were located farther south and west. Therefore Jacob sent Judah (now fully recognized as the leader among Jacob&#8217;s sons) on ahead to tell Joseph to meet them in Goshen, and to direct them exactly where to go.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">As soon as he heard his father was coming, Joseph hitched up his chariot and went to Goshen to meet him. When they finally met, for the first time in over twenty-two years, the joy was almost unbearable. \u2014 Morris, pages 634-635.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Egyptian people, according to both the Bible and secular history, despised the profession of shepherding. Up to this point, apparently, Pharaoh had not been appraised of the fact that the Israelites kept flocks and herds. For this reason, it would be better for them to keep more or less segregated from the Egyptians.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Joseph instructed his brothers to stress this aspect of their activities to Pharaoh, as he also would himself, in order to encourage him to designate Goshen as their home. Otherwise, there might be many\u2014perhaps even Pharoah himself\u2014who would prefer to see the Israelites mix with the Egyptians, the better to encourage intermarriage and eventual assimilation. \u2014 Morris, page 635.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Finally, to ensure a minimum of social contact with (and hence potential molestation by) the Egyptians, Joseph instructs his family to stress (not to lie about) their role as shepherds, since every shepherd is loathsome to the Egyptians). \u2014 Wechsler, page 260.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It appears that hordes of marauders, called <em>hycassos<\/em>, or shepherd kings, whose chief occupation, like the Bedouin Arabs of the present day, was to keep flocks, made a powerful irruption into Egypt, which they subdued, and ruled, by a succession of kings, with great tyranny for 259 years. Hence the persons and even the very name of shepherds were execrated, and held in the greatest odium by the Egyptians. \u2014 Treasury, page 34.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Obviously, God directed Joseph&#8217;s advice in this instance. By calling themselves shepherds, the Israelites guaranteed that the Egyptians would stay away, enabling God&#8217;s people to remain a separate and distinct people even while living in a foreign land for 400 years.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>28\u00a0Then he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to point out before him the way to Goshen.
