{"id":5903,"date":"2022-02-02T17:26:26","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T23:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5903"},"modified":"2023-09-14T04:54:06","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T10:54:06","slug":"genesis-461-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5903","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 46:1-7"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span class=\"text Gen-46-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1389\" class=\"text Gen-46-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, \u201cJacob, Jacob!\u201d <\/span><span class=\"text Gen-46-2\">And he said, \u201cHere I am.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1390\" class=\"text Gen-46-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>So He said, \u201cI am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1391\" class=\"text Gen-46-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1392\" class=\"text Gen-46-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1393\" class=\"text Gen-46-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1394\" class=\"text Gen-46-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>His sons and his sons\u2019 sons, his daughters and his sons\u2019 daughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">God spake to him in the visions of the night as &#8220;Israel,&#8221; but addressed him as &#8220;Jacob, Jacob.&#8221; He repeats the name; and [perhaps] to kindle affection and confidence He uses the personal name and not the official title. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">God forbade Abraham and Isaac to go down into Egypt, He now encourages Jacob to go, saying: &#8220;I will go down with thee.&#8221; When God promises His company there need be neither hesitation nor fear.&#8221; \u2014 Williams, page 40.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Each time [Jacob] had made an important move, God had spoken to him directly. When he left his parents to go to Haran, God had appeared to him at Bethel (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4847\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 28:13-15<\/span><\/a>); when he had been with Laban long enough, God instructed him to return to Canaan (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4870\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 31:3<\/span><\/a>); even when he left Shechem, God had appeared to him (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5399\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 35:1<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5418\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">9-12<\/span><\/a>). <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">On his way out of Canaan Israel had in mind to stop by the old altar at Beersheba, where he had lived with his father Isaac (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4847\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 28:10<\/span><\/a>). Beersheba was near the southern boundary of the land, and would, so to speak, be the &#8220;point of no return.&#8221; There, at Beersheba, he offered sacrifices &#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">That night, once again, God appeared to him in a vision, for the eighth and last time, so far as the record goes. &#8230; God set Jacob&#8217;s mind at ease about going down to Egypt. Identifying Himself as indeed the God of his father Isaac, He also assured Jacob that He (<em>El<\/em>, the strong Creator and Sovereign of all men) would protect him and bless him in Egypt, even as He had in Canaan.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Furthermore, God promised that He would bring him back up out of Egypt, when it was time to do so. This promise, as applied to Jacob personally, was only fulfilled after his death (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6019\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 49:29<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6023\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">50:4-8<\/span><\/a>), but it found its more complete fulfillment in the lives of his descendants, in the days of Moses and Joshua. &#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Last of all, God assured him that he would see Joseph again. Furthermore, when Jacob&#8217;s time to die would come, it would be his beloved son, Joseph himself, who would perform the sacred duty of &#8220;laying his hand upon thine eyes,&#8221; that is, of closing his eyes in death for his burial. \u2014 Morris, pages 628-629.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">[Jacob] evidently had daughters (v.7) and granddaughters, even though Dinah is the only daughter whose name or birth is specifically mentioned (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4861\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 30:21<\/span><\/a>), and Serah, daughter of Asher, the only granddaughter (v.17). &#8230; The word &#8220;daughters&#8221; (v.7) cannot refer to his sons&#8217; wives, as those who are enumerated are said to be his seed.
