{"id":589,"date":"2009-06-19T05:00:55","date_gmt":"2009-06-19T11:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1002things.com\/?p=589"},"modified":"2022-01-09T13:58:59","modified_gmt":"2022-01-09T19:58:59","slug":"john-322-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=589","title":{"rendered":"John 3:22-30"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">22 After these things came Jesus and His disciples into the land of Judea; and there He tarried with them, and baptized.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">24 For John was not yet cast into prison.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">25 Then there arose a question between some of John&#8217;s disciples and the Jews about purifying.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, He that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom&#8217;s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">30 He must increase, but I must decrease.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Judea (v.22) \u2014 the area around Jerusalem<\/h3>\n<h3>baptize (v.22)\u00a0 = dip, immerse<\/h3>\n<h3>Aenon (v.23) = place of springs \u2014 in the Jordan valley about 20 miles north of where Jesus was<\/h3>\n<h3>Salim (v.23)\u00a0 = peace<\/h3>\n<h3>much water (v.23) \u2014 perhaps indicating that John&#8217;s baptism was by immersion?<\/h3>\n<h3>The disciples baptized, but Jesus did not. (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=600\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 4:2<\/span><\/a> \u2014 <em>Though Jesus Himself baptized not, but His disciples.<\/em><\/span>) The disciples baptized under His authority. This was the same as John&#8217;s baptism \u2014 unto repentance.<\/h3>\n<h3>question (verse 4) \u2014 No details are given. Perhaps this was a dispute about which baptism, John&#8217;s or the disciples&#8217;, was more purifying. Purification, for Jews, was through sacrifices and washings, not baptism. Perhaps they questioned if baptism could purify at all. Perhaps John&#8217;s disciples were jealous that people were going to Jesus?<\/h3>\n<h3>Jews (v.25)\u00a0 \u2014 Jewish leaders. These were the same men as in <a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=539\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 1:19<\/span><\/a>, because John says <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Ye yourselves bear me witness that I said &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>John answered in\u00a0 humility (vs. 27-29). He was filled with the Spirit (Luke 1:15).<\/h3>\n<h3>can receive nothing except &#8230; (v.27) \u2014 John&#8217;s ministry was from heaven<\/h3>\n<h3>bridegroom (v.29) \u2014 Christ<\/h3>\n<h3>bridegroom&#8217;s friend (v.29) \u2014 John the Baptist<\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus was the bridegroom over Israel. &#8230; <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">As the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee (Isaiah 62:5). And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days (Mark 2:19-20).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus Christ is also the bridegroom to the church (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5140\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 11:2<\/span><\/a>), but in this passage, the word is used just to show John&#8217;s relationship to Christ.<\/h3>\n<h3>The bride here is not the church. It hadn&#8217;t yet been revealed.
