{"id":5613,"date":"2022-01-13T14:32:22","date_gmt":"2022-01-13T20:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5613"},"modified":"2023-09-05T12:36:33","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T18:36:33","slug":"genesis-397-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5613","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 39:7-23"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1157\" class=\"text Gen-39-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>And it came to pass after these things that his master\u2019s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, \u201cLie with me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1158\" class=\"text Gen-39-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>But he refused and said to his master\u2019s wife, \u201cLook, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1159\" class=\"text Gen-39-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1160\" class=\"text Gen-39-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1161\" class=\"text Gen-39-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1162\" class=\"text Gen-39-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>that she caught him by his garment, saying, \u201cLie with me.\u201d But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1163\" class=\"text Gen-39-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1164\" class=\"text Gen-39-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, \u201cSee, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1165\" class=\"text Gen-39-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1166\" class=\"text Gen-39-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>So she kept his garment with her until his master came home.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1167\" class=\"text Gen-39-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, \u201cThe Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1168\" class=\"text Gen-39-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1169\" class=\"text Gen-39-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, \u201cYour servant did to me after this manner,\u201d that his anger was aroused.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1170\" class=\"text Gen-39-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph\u2019s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king\u2019s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1171\" class=\"text Gen-39-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>But the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-1171\" class=\"text Gen-39-21\">him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1172\" class=\"text Gen-39-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph\u2019s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1173\" class=\"text Gen-39-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under\u00a0Joseph\u2019s authority, because the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> was with him; and whatever he did, the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> made it prosper.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joseph&#8217;s imprisonment and subsequent events are mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8158\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 105:17-22<\/span><\/a>: <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-15624\" class=\"text Ps-105-17\">He sent a man before them\u2014<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-105-17\">Joseph\u2014who was sold as a slave. <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-15625\" class=\"text Ps-105-18\">They hurt his feet with fetters, h<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-105-18\">e was laid in irons. u<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-15626\" class=\"text Ps-105-19\">ntil the time that his word came to pass, t<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-105-19\">he word of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> tested him. <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-15627\" class=\"text Ps-105-20\">The king sent and released him, t<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-105-20\">he ruler of the people let him go free. <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-15628\" class=\"text Ps-105-21\">He made him lord of his house, a<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-105-21\">nd ruler of all his possessions, t<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-15629\" class=\"text Ps-105-22\">o bind his princes at his pleasure, a<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-105-22\">nd teach his elders wisdom.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In rejecting [Potiphar&#8217;s wife&#8217;s] invitation, Joseph tried not to offend her. [He didn&#8217;t say that] she was unattractive or undesirable, nor that he was condemning her as immoral for making such a proposal, but that there were greater considerations which must take precedence. His master, and her husband, trusted him fully; it would be a terrible betrayal of his trust for Joseph to take the one thing he had kept from him, his own wife. Even more importantly, such an action would be a great sin against God Himself! Even though neither her husband nor the other servants should ever find out, God would know. &#8230; Potiphar&#8217;s wife, however, was nor persuaded by Joseph&#8217;s good and proper reasoning, but continued day after day trying to attract him to her bed. Joseph not only continued to refuse, but began to avoid her altogether, trying not even &#8220;to be with her.&#8221; \u2014 Morris, pages 561-562<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The passionate desire of Potiphar&#8217;s wife suddenly turned into the rage of a woman scorned. Knowing that her desire for Joseph was not completely impossible of fulfillment, her only thought was to humiliate him as deeply as possible for his rejection of her. Joseph&#8217;s garment (apparently a sort of long cloak or robe) was still in her hand. She knew it would be interpreted as evidence incriminating her unless she quickly took the initiative by accusing Joseph.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Accordingly she began to make a loud outcry, calling for the men servants to come help her. She cleverly appealed to their latent jealously of Joseph and resentment of Potiphar by suggesting it was her husband&#8217;s fault for bringing in an outsider (&#8220;an Hebrew&#8221;). &#8230; [Potiphar&#8217;s wife] seemed to place the blame on Potiphar himself for giving a foreign slave such authority in freedom around the house. &#8230; There is no indication that Joseph made any effort to defend himself from these charges. \u2014 Morris, page 562-564.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>There really isn&#8217;t much to say about this passage except that Joseph must have been extraordinarily impressive\u2014everywhere he went, people in power turned over all their responsibilities to him and trusted him completely.
