{"id":5540,"date":"2022-01-09T20:16:48","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T02:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5540"},"modified":"2023-09-04T07:22:40","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T13:22:40","slug":"genesis-3812-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5540","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 38:12-23"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1132\" class=\"text Gen-38-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah\u2019s wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1133\" class=\"text Gen-38-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>And it was told Tamar, saying, \u201cLook, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1134\" class=\"text Gen-38-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>So she took off her widow\u2019s garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1135\" class=\"text Gen-38-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1136\" class=\"text Gen-38-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>Then he turned to her by the way, and said, \u201cPlease let me come in to you\u201d; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. <\/span><span class=\"text Gen-38-16\">So she said, \u201cWhat will you give me, that you may come in to me?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1137\" class=\"text Gen-38-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cI will send a young goat from the flock.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"text Gen-38-17\">So she said, \u201cWill you give me a pledge till you send it?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1138\" class=\"text Gen-38-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>Then he said, \u201cWhat pledge shall I give you?\u201d <\/span><span class=\"text Gen-38-18\">So she said, \u201cYour signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.\u201d Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1139\" class=\"text Gen-38-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>So she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1140\" class=\"text Gen-38-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman\u2019s hand, but he did not find her.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1141\" class=\"text Gen-38-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>Then he asked the men of that place, saying, \u201cWhere is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?\u201d <\/span><span class=\"text Gen-38-21\">And they said, \u201cThere was no harlot in this place.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1142\" class=\"text Gen-38-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>So he returned to Judah and said, \u201cI cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1143\" class=\"text Gen-38-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Then Judah said, \u201cLet her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Timnah (v.12) \u2014 probably a town which was later located in the border of Judah, between Jerusalem and Diospolis, given to Dan, and mentioned in the history of Samson as belonging to the Philistines (Judges 14:1).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">[Tamar] was actually posing as a temple prostitute, rather than as a common harlot, as is evident from the fact that the word used to describe her later by the Canaanite men themselves (Hebrew <em>cedesha<\/em>, meaning &#8220;one set apart&#8221; is used in verses 21-22) was the word used for this purpose. \u2014 Morris, page 553.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>sat in an open place (v.14) \u2014 the common behavior of a prostitute (Proverbs 7:12; Jeremiah 3:2). &#8220;Open place&#8221; means &#8220;the door of eyes,&#8221; and some believe it is a proper name referring to Enaim, a city in Judah.<\/h3>\n<h3>your signet and cord (v.18) \u2014 The &#8220;Signet&#8221; is a ring-seal, with which impressions were made to ascertain property, etc. Jeremiah 22:24 says it was worn on the hand; though it might also have been suspended from the neck by a ribband. &#8220;Cord&#8221; from a word meaning &#8220;to twist,&#8221; may mean either a wreath for the arm or neck, a twisted collar, or a bracelet. It may have been a collar by which the signet was suspended; although here it is used in the plural.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It must be recognized that the Biblical record itself does not condemn or criticize [Tamar]. &#8230; We cannot judge Judah&#8217;s actions so charitably, however.
