{"id":542,"date":"2009-05-02T06:00:51","date_gmt":"2009-05-02T12:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1002things.com\/?p=542"},"modified":"2022-01-07T18:57:33","modified_gmt":"2022-01-08T00:57:33","slug":"john-123-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=542","title":{"rendered":"John 1:23-28"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe&#8217;s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Quote from Isaiah 40:3\u2014 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.<\/em><\/span> This is a prophecy of Christ&#8217;s first and second coming. The Lord is a highway for God.<\/h3>\n<h3>John heralds Christ, but he is only a voice. Again, his humility shows.<\/h3>\n<h3>in the wilderness (the spiritual barrenness of Israel) \u2014 outside the dead temple and religious system<\/h3>\n<h3>The Pharisees were big on rituals. They wanted to know what authority John had to baptize. Baptism expressed repentance. The Jordan River (lit. &#8220;descending) is a type of death. To be baptized meant an admittance that death was deserved.<\/h3>\n<h3>Neither John&#8217;s kingdom message or his baptism has anything to do with the church.<\/h3>\n<h3>Prior to this, baptism had been for Gentiles, a purification rite for converting to Judaism. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you (Ezekiel 36:24-25).<\/em><\/span> But John was baptizing Jews!<\/h3>\n<h3>John administered repentance; Jesus provided a new heart and spirit.<\/h3>\n<h3>When John spoke of Christ, there is no indication the Pharisees responded.<\/h3>\n<h3>shoe lachet \u2014 untying a sandal, the lowest of tasks<\/h3>\n<h3>Bethabara \u2014 House of Passage \u2014 probably the same place where Joshua crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land.
