So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29013\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Are they ministers of Christ?\u2014I speak as a fool\u2014I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29014\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29015\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29016\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29017\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness\u2014<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29018\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29019\" class=\"text 2Cor-11-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Paul had already included a similar passage in this letter \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5013\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 6:3-10<\/span><\/a>. My notes on that passage contain addition information on some of the trials Paul listed here.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In verses 21-29, [Paul] challenges these false teachers to prove their fidelity to the gospel and to suffering humanity, by a similar or a superior record of devotion, of affliction and of national privilege.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">So real was his love for all his converts (vs. 28-29) that he consciously felt their weakness, and burned with shame or indignation when anyone was injured or caused to sin. \u2014 Williams, page 907.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In defending his apostleship, Paul does not recall his great accomplishments, but his sufferings for Christ. &#8230; This was better proof of the quality of his ministry. &#8230; To the Galatians, who had also been induced to question his call of God as an apostle, he threw the certificate of his apostleship down on the table, as it were (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=960\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 1:11-16<\/span><\/a>) and, closing the epistle, says: &#8220;From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks (lit., the brand) of the Lord Jesus (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1109\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 6:17<\/span><\/a>). <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Thus, the apostle did not wish to boast, but when forced to do so he had at least boasted of the right things. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Were these Judaizers Hebrews, Israelites, of the seed of Abraham? So was he. but in suffering for Christ he was more\u2014much more. Speaking as the &#8220;fool&#8221; they thought him to be, he lists sufferings they had not even begun to endure. &#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">How did the lives of the self-important Judaizers compare with this? We have already had this answered for us in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5168\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">vs. 19-21<\/span><\/a> where he unquestionably refers to these men, who had already taken so much from them. \u2014 Stam, pages 216-217.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one (v.24) \u2014 The Law stated that a man could not be whipped more than 40 times (Deuteronomy 25:2-3). The Jews limited the number to 39 in case they accidentally miscounted and broke the law.<\/h3>\n<h3>Three times I was beaten with rods (v.25) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1659\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 16:22-23<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1924\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">21:32<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>Once I was stoned (v.25) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1549\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 14:5<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1570\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">19<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>Three times I was shipwrecked (v.25) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2018\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 27:41-44<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>In journeys often (v.26) \u2014 The Acts records four visits of Paul to Jerusalem after his conversion: 1) <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1468\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:23-30<\/span><\/a>. This seems to be the same visit as that mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=972\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 1:18-19<\/span><\/a>. The apostles of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1468\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:27<\/span><\/a> were Peter and James, the Lord&#8217;s brother. 2) <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1508\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 11:30<\/span><\/a>. Paul may have been in Jerusalem during the events of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1513\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 12:1-24<\/span><\/a>. See <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1520\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 25<\/span><\/a>. 3) <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1572\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">15:1-3<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">0<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=980\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:2-10<\/span><\/a>. and 4) <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1917\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 21:17-23:35<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>In addition, Paul took three long journeys to start churches around Asia and Europe.<\/h3>\n<h3>In perils of my own countrymen (v.26) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1468\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:23-24<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1676\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">17:5<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>My deep concern for all the churches (v.28) \u2014 for example: <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1598\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 15:36<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1898\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">20:17-21<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5032\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 7:12<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5265\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">12:20<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1059\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 4:11<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4215\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 3:10<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>22\u00a0Are they Hebrews?
