{"id":5049,"date":"2021-11-27T14:37:28","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T20:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5049"},"modified":"2022-06-10T20:47:10","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T02:47:10","slug":"2-corinthians-88-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5049","title":{"rendered":"2 Corinthians 8:8-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text 2Cor-8-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28942\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28943\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28944\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28945\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28946\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28947\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack\u2014that there may be equality.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28948\" class=\"text 2Cor-8-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>As it is written, <span class=\"oblique\">\u201cHe who<\/span> gathered <span class=\"oblique\">much had nothing left over, and he who<\/span> gathered <span class=\"oblique\">little had no lack.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>I speak not by commandment (v.8) \u2014 God did not tell Paul to write this part of the letter. Paul goes on to give the Corinthians his advice beginning in verse 10.<\/h3>\n<h3>Verse 9 expresses the same thought as that in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1159\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Philippians 2:6-7<\/span><\/a>, and especially the words &#8220;He emptied Himself.&#8221; Christ was rich in divinity and glory, but took on the nature of man. He also became a poor man and lived in poverty.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">More than a year previous the Corinthian Christians had enthusiastically agreed to participate in this great offering for the impoverished Judaean saints. But, as with many of God&#8217;s people today, the nearer the time for the redemption of their pledge drew near, the less they felt like doing it. Therefore Paul &#8220;advised&#8221; them that it was &#8220;expedient&#8221; for them to do their part without further delay, for it would be embarrassing to him, not to mention them, if all the Gentile churches, with a veritable army of their delegates, were forced to proceed to Jerusalem without a representation from the largest church of all. \u2014 Stam, page 177.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">________________________________________________________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The sense of the above [vs. 12-15] we perceive to be as follows: &#8220;No one is asking\u00a0 you to do more than you can or to give more than you can afford.&#8221; <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The policy of Christian giving was set at Antioch, the Gentile city where &#8220;the disciples were first called Christians&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1508\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 11:26<\/span><\/a>) and Saul, recently saved, was called to be their leader (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1508\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 11:25-26<\/span><\/a>). The Bible law of &#8220;first mention&#8221; looms important here.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">And exactly what was &#8220;Christian giving&#8221;? It was a distinct break from giving as taught in the Sermon on the Mount and at Pentecost. When the Judean believers who had practiced the program of &#8220;all things common&#8221; and &#8220;sell that ye have and give alms,&#8221;\u2014when these began to experience serious lack, they appealed for help to the brethren at Antioch with the result that: &#8220;&#8230; the disciples [at Antioch] every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: &#8220;Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1508\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 11:29-30<\/span><\/a>). <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This has remained the policy for Christian giving ever since (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2542\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 16:2<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5045\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 8:1-5<\/span><\/a>, 12-14). \u2014Stam, page 178<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">________________________________________________________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Notice how tactfully Paul says, &#8220;I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened&#8221; as though the Corinthians were being burdened and the Macedonians eased! Indeed, he even suggests that some day they, the Corinthians, might be poor and the Macedonians well off! As for Paul, his desire was for all to do their part, &#8220;that there may be equality.&#8221; \u2014Stam, page 179<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>The quote in verse 15 is from Exodus 16:18, from the time God sent manna to the Israelites: <em><span id=\"en-NKJV-1966\" class=\"text Exod-16-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">So when they measured it by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.
