{"id":4920,"date":"2021-02-27T13:08:55","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T19:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4920"},"modified":"2022-04-26T07:55:52","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T13:55:52","slug":"2-corinthians-25-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4920","title":{"rendered":"2 Corinthians 2:5-11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28830\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but all of you to some extent\u2014not to be too severe.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28831\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28832\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28833\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28834\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28835\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28836\" class=\"text 2Cor-2-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The statement in verse 5 appears to mean that the evil teaching of the wrong-doer did not grieve Paul only but also the Corinthians; and so he generously disclaimed any intention of charging them with sympathy with the evil. On the contrary he recognizes them as partners, i.e. as having &#8220;part&#8221; with him in the sorrow. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;In the person of Christ&#8221; (v.10), i.e., as Christ&#8217;s apostolic representative invested by Him with punitive power. \u2014 Williams, page 898.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>severe (v.5) = to put a burden on<\/h3>\n<h3>comfort (v.7) = lit. &#8220;to call to one&#8217;s side&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>swallowed (v.7) = devoured, consumed<\/h3>\n<h3>test (v.9) = prove, approved<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paul longed to know assuredly, from Titus&#8217; own testimony, whether the Corinthian believers were now &#8220;obedient in <em>all<\/em> things.&#8221; To discipline the immoral brother was an important responsibility, but now that he had so heartily repented, did they <em>forgive<\/em> him? This was no less important\u2014and no less a responsibility. Also, they had accepted Paul&#8217;s rebuke of their own permissiveness\u2014his case against them was so unanswerable\u2014but was their attitude toward him <em>now<\/em> what it should be toward a God-appointed apostle? <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">He assures them that <em>he<\/em> has forgiven the repentant backsliders among them for <em>their<\/em> sakes &#8220;in the person of Christ,&#8221; i.e., representing Christ.
