{"id":4884,"date":"2021-01-09T16:29:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-09T22:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4884"},"modified":"2022-04-24T17:26:56","modified_gmt":"2022-04-24T23:26:56","slug":"2-corinthians-13-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4884","title":{"rendered":"2 Corinthians 1:3-4"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text 2Cor-1-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28805\" class=\"text 2Cor-1-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>blessed (v.1) = speak well of, celebrate by praising, worthy of praise, used only of God the Father and of Christ, because only God is inherently praiseworthy. From the Greek word from which we get the English word <em>eulogize<\/em>.<\/h3>\n<h3>mercies (v.1) = compassion, favor, grace \u2014 a deep feeling about someone&#8217;s difficulty or misfortune.<\/h3>\n<h3>comfort (v.1) = a calling or summons to one&#8217;s aid, consolation and encouragement<\/h3>\n<h3>This next quote from Stam really got me thinking about what I expect\u2014and should expect\u2014when I go to God for comfort.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The English word <em>comfort<\/em> had a somewhat different meaning to the translators &#8230; than it does to us today. We generally think of comfort as consolation or solace: an effort to assuage another&#8217;s grief. But to them it had more of the meaning of <em>encouragement<\/em>. Indeed, the Greek <em>paraklesis<\/em> means to be &#8220;called alongside,&#8221; i.e., to help. The classic example &#8230; of the Holy Spirit&#8217;s usage of the words rendered &#8220;comfort&#8221; and &#8220;Comforter&#8221; is found in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1748\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 6:18-19<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=834\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 14:16<\/span><\/a> respectively:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;That &#8230; we might have strong consolation <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[Greek, paraklesis]<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> &#8230; to lay hold on the hope set before us: which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and stedfast &#8230;&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1748\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 6:18-19<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter &#8230;&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=834\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 14:16<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Here again, the &#8220;Comforter&#8221; is not one who would assuage their grief, but one who would always be &#8220;alongside to help,&#8221; as our Lord had been.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In the &#8220;comfort&#8221; we read of in 2 Corinthians 1:3, God does not say, &#8220;Just lie down here and get a good sleep, and you&#8217;ll feel better.&#8221; Rather He comes alongside to <em>arouse us from sleep<\/em> and to <em>en-courage<\/em> us (i.e., to inspire us with courage)&#8221;. \u2014 Stam, pages 34-35.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Christ&#8217;s followers are not promised exemption from suffering, but they are assured of consolation in suffering. They only can truly comfort others who themselves have suffered and been comforted. \u2014 Williams<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Some &#8230; see believers only as in Christ, already seated in the heavenlies, having been justified from all their sins. But these overlook the fact that the same passage in Ephesians which states that we have been raised from the dead, and made to sit in heavenly places in Christ (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3693\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 2:6<\/span><\/a>), also says that we have &#8220;access by one Spirit unto the Father (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3701\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 2:18<\/span><\/a>). The former, of course, has to do with our present position in Christ, while the latter refers to our present condition and our need to take advantage of the free &#8220;access&#8221; God has given us into His presence by the blood of Christ.
