{"id":4804,"date":"2020-08-02T20:22:28","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T02:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4804"},"modified":"2023-08-11T06:25:45","modified_gmt":"2023-08-11T12:25:45","slug":"genesis-241-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4804","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 24:1-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span class=\"text Gen-24-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>Now Abraham\u00a0was old, well advanced in age; and the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> had blessed Abraham in all things.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-594\" class=\"text Gen-24-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, \u201cPlease, put your hand under my thigh,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-595\" class=\"text Gen-24-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>and I will make you swear by the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-596\" class=\"text Gen-24-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>but you shall go\u00a0to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-597\" class=\"text Gen-24-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>And the servant said to him, \u201cPerhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-598\" class=\"text Gen-24-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>But Abraham said to him, \u201cBeware that you do not take my son back there.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-599\" class=\"text Gen-24-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>The\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> God of heaven, who\u00a0took me from my father\u2019s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying,\u00a0\u2018To your descendants I give this land,\u2019\u00a0He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-600\" class=\"text Gen-24-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-601\" class=\"text Gen-24-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-602\" class=\"text Gen-24-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Then the servant took ten of his master\u2019s camels and departed,\u00a0for all his master\u2019s goods\u00a0were in his hand. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to\u00a0the city of Nahor.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-603\" class=\"text Gen-24-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at evening time, the time\u00a0when women go out to draw\u00a0water.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-604\" class=\"text Gen-24-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Then he\u00a0said, \u201cO\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> God of my master Abraham, please\u00a0give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-605\" class=\"text Gen-24-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Behold,\u00a0here I stand by the well of water, and\u00a0the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-606\" class=\"text Gen-24-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, \u2018Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,\u2019 and she says, \u2018Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink\u2019\u2014let\u00a0her\u00a0be the one\u00a0You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And\u00a0by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Isaac himself was forty years old by this time (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4821\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 25:20<\/span><\/a>), which means Abraham was 140. &#8230; Abraham knew there must be such a girl [one who loved God, a virgin, one who loved her own family, but would be OK with making her home in Canaan] somewhere, because he trusted God to provide the promised seed through Isaac; and for this Isaac must have the right woman for a wife. He had recently learned of his brother Nahor, and had even learned that Nahor had a young granddaughter named Rebekah (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4794\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 22:20, 23<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Morris, page 392-393.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Abraham was adamant in insisting that Isaac not go, probably because he had learned by then that the heir of God&#8217;s promises should stay in the promised land. As a matter of fact, during all his life, Isaac never left Canaan at all (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4824\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 26:2-3<\/span><\/a>). If Issac had gone in search of a bride, there might have been too great a temptation for him to stay with her among her own people, rather than to return to Canaan.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Therefore, Abraham sent his servant on the mission. This man was the steward of all his house, the oldest and most trusted one of his servants. If Eliezer was still living (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4699\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 15:2<\/span><\/a>), then he doubtless was the man. However, this event took place over fifty years after Eliezer&#8217;s name had been mentioned, so me may well have been dead by this time. \u2014 Morris, page 393.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The sign and seal of the oath was a strange one. The servant was to &#8220;put his hand under the thigh of Abraham,&#8221; while making the promise. The only other occasion on which a similar procedure was used was the time Jacob asked Joseph to put his hand under his thigh and promise he would not bury him in Egypt (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5969\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 47:29<\/span><\/a>). the exact meaning of this phrase is obscure. The word &#8220;thigh&#8221; is frequently also translated &#8220;side&#8221; or &#8220;shaft.&#8221; On two important occasions, it refers to the loins. For example, In <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5914\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 46:26<\/span><\/a>, it obviously refers to the procreative system: &#8220;All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his <em>loins<\/em> &#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">All the ancient Jewish commentators understood this promise to be a euphemism for placing the hand under the male genital organ, and to have a symbolic meaning akin to that of circumcision, so far as the patriarchs were concerned. It was a most solemn oath, in any event, and clearly was related to God&#8217;s promise in connection with both the promised land and the promised seed. \u2014 Morris, page 394.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The servant immediately set out to equip a caravan for the journey and for the accomplishment of his mission. This required taking provisions for the long trip, a large quantity of his master&#8217;s goods (or &#8220;valuables&#8221;) as presents for the prospective bride and her family, and enough attendants (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4811\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 24:59<\/span><\/a>) for protection and other needs of the journey. &#8230; Abraham&#8217;s servant knew that the women of the place would come out to the wells to draw water for their households in the early evening, and this seemed the best place to meet them.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Drawing enough water to satisfy the thirst of ten large and tired camels would be a hard and wearisome task, to say the least. He couldn&#8217;t really ask a girl to do such a thing. Nevertheless, if she would do it voluntarily, it would be a strong indication that she was the right one.
