{"id":4780,"date":"2020-07-19T17:52:25","date_gmt":"2020-07-19T23:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4780"},"modified":"2023-08-08T06:32:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T12:32:58","slug":"genesis-211-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4780","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 21:1-8"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span class=\"text Gen-21-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>And the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0visited Sarah as He had said, and the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> did for Sarah\u00a0as He had spoken.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-516\" class=\"text Gen-21-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-517\" class=\"text Gen-21-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him\u2014whom Sarah bore to him\u2014Isaac.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-518\" class=\"text Gen-21-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-519\" class=\"text Gen-21-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-520\" class=\"text Gen-21-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>And Sarah said,\u00a0\u201cGod has made me laugh,\u00a0and all who hear\u00a0will laugh with me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"chapter-2\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-521\" class=\"text Gen-21-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>She also said, \u201cWho would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?\u00a0For I have borne\u00a0him\u00a0a son in his old age.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span class=\"text Gen-21-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In spite of all Satan&#8217;s efforts Isaac, the progenitor and type of the Messiah is born; and born at the &#8220;set time,&#8221; that is, the &#8220;exact time&#8221; of which God had spoken to Abraham. &#8230; His birth was a miracle; but at the same time it must not be forgotten that human life at that period was very much longer than today, so that a woman of 90 was not at all so aged as would appear in present times. Sarah&#8217;s father lived for 200 years; at the time of Isaac&#8217;s birth Shem was about 560 years of age; and there must have been many thousands of persons at the time who had already lived through two or three centuries.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The chapter presents a new creation, hence the Divine title &#8220;Elohim&#8221; and not &#8220;Jehovah&#8221; appears throughout it, until <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4787\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 33<\/span><\/a> is reached. In this verse God is &#8220;Jehovah&#8221; because it touches His covenant relationship as a Savior&#8230;.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Isaac means &#8220;laughter.&#8221; His advent filled the mouth of Sarah with laughter, and caused all that heard to laugh with her. \u2014 Williams, page 25.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Finally, after twenty-five years in the land of Canaan, waiting for the fulfillment of God&#8217;s promise, Abraham&#8217;s faith was rewarded. The apostle Paul has a beautiful commentary on this.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-28040\" class=\"text Rom-4-17\">(As it is written, <span class=\"oblique\">\u201cI have made you a father of many nations\u201d<\/span>) in the presence of Him whom he believed\u2014God,\u00a0who gives life to the dead and calls those\u00a0things which do not exist as though they did;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-28041\" class=\"text Rom-4-18\">who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken,\u00a0<span class=\"oblique\">\u201cSo shall your descendants be.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-28042\" class=\"text Rom-4-19\">And not being weak in faith,\u00a0he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old),\u00a0and the deadness of Sarah\u2019s womb.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-28043\" class=\"text Rom-4-20\">He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-28044\" class=\"text Rom-4-21\">and being fully convinced that what He had promised\u00a0He was also able to perform.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-28045\" class=\"text Rom-4-22\">And therefore\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-28045\" class=\"text Rom-4-22\"><span class=\"oblique\">\u201cit was accounted to him for righteousness\u201d (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-28045\" class=\"text Rom-4-22\"><span class=\"oblique\"><a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=299\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 4:17-22<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Abraham, therefore, is offered throughout the New Testament as the prototype of those who are justified by faith. The apostle Paul stresses that this imputed righteousness was received by Abraham even before he was circumcised (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=294\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 4:9-12<\/span><\/a>) and long before the Mosaic law was given (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1033\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 3:16-18<\/span><\/a>), so that salvation depends neither on the ritual nor the moral law, but only on God&#8217;s grace received through faith. Abraham is called &#8220;the father of all them that believe&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=295\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 4:11<\/span><\/a>) and &#8220;the father of us all&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=298\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 4:16<\/span><\/a>). Further, Scripture assures us that &#8220;they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham&#8221; and that &#8220;they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1019\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 3:7, 9<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Sarah also, though of doubtful mind for a time, became strong in faith. &#8220;Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered a a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1816\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 11:11<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Morris, pages 365-366.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Sarah was &#8220;young&#8221; enough again, not only to have a child, but to nurse him (verse 7); Abraham was &#8220;young&#8221; enough again not only to father Isaac, but also six other sons of his wife Keturah, after Sarah died (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4814\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 25:2<\/span><\/a>)! When God miraculously heals, it is not a partial healing, but a complete and instant restoration. \u2014 Morris, page 366-367.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">There is such a thing as God&#8217;s &#8220;set time&#8221;\u2014His &#8220;due season,&#8221; and for this the faithful must be content to wait.
