{"id":4538,"date":"2019-02-17T18:13:27","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T00:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4538"},"modified":"2023-07-08T07:14:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T13:14:00","slug":"genesis-317-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4538","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 3:17-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"top-1\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-ESV-73\" class=\"text Gen-3-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>And to Adam he said,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBecause you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, \u2018You shall not eat of it,\u2019 cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-ESV-74\" class=\"text Gen-3-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Gen-3-18\">and you shall eat the plants of the field.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-ESV-75\" class=\"text Gen-3-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>By the sweat of your face\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Gen-3-19\">you shall eat bread,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Gen-3-19\">till you return to the ground,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Gen-3-19\">for out of it you were taken;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Gen-3-19\">for you are dust,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Gen-3-19\">and\u00a0to dust you shall return.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>cursed is the ground (v.17) \u2014 The word &#8220;ground&#8221; is the same as the word for &#8220;earth,&#8221; referring to the basic material of the physical world.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Thus, the entire &#8220;creation was made subject to vanity.&#8221; The earth began to &#8220;wax old, as doth a garment&#8221; and ultimately &#8220;shall perish&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1635\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 1:10-12<\/span><\/a>). Since all flesh is made of the earth&#8217;s physical elements, it also is subject to the law of decay and death and as &#8220;grass, withereth &#8230; and falleth away&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7581\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Peter 1:24<\/span><\/a>). It is universal experience that <em>all things<\/em>, living or nonliving, eventually wear out, run down, grow old, decay, and pass into the dust. \u2014 Morris, page 126<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The curse on man himself was fourfold: (1) <em>sorrow<\/em>, resulting from continual disappointment and futility; (2) <em>pain and suffering<\/em>, signified by the &#8220;thorns&#8221; which intermittently hinder man in his efforts to provide a living for his family; (3) <em>sweat<\/em>, or <em>tears<\/em>, the &#8220;strong crying&#8221; of intense struggle against a hostile environment; and finally (4) physical <em>death<\/em>, which would eventually triumph over all man&#8217;s efforts, with the structure of his body returning to the simple elements of the earth.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">But Christ, as Son of Man and second Adam, has been made the curse for us (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1030\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 3:13<\/span><\/a>). He was the &#8220;man of <em>sorrows<\/em>&#8221; (Isaiah 53:3); acquainted more with grief than any other man, He was wounded, bruised, and chastised for us (Isaiah 53:5), and indeed wore the very <em>thorns<\/em> of the curse as His crown (Mark 15:17); in the agony of His labor, He <em>sweat<\/em> as it were drops of blood (Luke 22:44), and &#8220;offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1734\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 5:7<\/span><\/a>). And, finally, God brought Him into the &#8220;dust of death&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3877\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 22:15<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Therefore, because He bore all the curse Himself for us, once again the dwelling of God shall someday be with\u00a0 men and &#8220;there shall be no more <em>death<\/em>, neither <em>sorrow<\/em>, nor <em>crying<\/em>, neither shall there be any more <em>pain<\/em>: for the former things are passed away&#8221; (Revelation 21:4). &#8220;And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it: and his servants shall serve Him&#8221; (Revelation 22:3). \u2014 Morris, page 127.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Adam&#8217;s chastisement is essentially <em>identical<\/em> to that of Eve, consisting of both a <em>psychological<\/em> component\u2014namely, the specific desire to &#8220;master&#8221; the other, as already pronounced in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4535\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v. 16<\/span><\/a>\u2014and a <em>physical<\/em> component\u2014namely, the specific experience of toil, which\u00a0 is in fact the <em>same word<\/em> used in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4535\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v. 16<\/span><\/a> to describe the increased &#8220;pain&#8221; of the woman&#8217;s childbirth (and which may otherwise be translated &#8220;hard labor&#8221;). These intentional parallels between the chastisements applied to the man and to the woman serve to underscore the point that, despite their differing roles and responsibilities, the way in which God chastises the sin of children\u2014whether male or female\u2014is essentially the same, reflective of the fact that He is equally concerned for the restoration and ultimate &#8220;good&#8221; (i.e., that which is <em>best<\/em>) of each one. \u2014 Wechsler, page 109.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The physical death to which God refers in the last line of v. 19\u2014&#8221;and to dust you shall return&#8221;\u2014does not represent the still further chastisement of Adam being made mortal, for Eve\u2014to whom no such statement is made\u2014likewise eventually dies, and from <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4546\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.22<\/span><\/a>, in any event, it is clear that &#8220;immortality&#8221; was not part of their created nature, but in fact a quality conveyed by the tree of life. By this statement, therefore, God is simply indicating the endpoint of man&#8217;s life of hard toil\u2014i.e., strictly physical death, or the &#8220;first&#8221; death\u2014which is the inevitable consequence of being restricted from the tree of life. By the same token we see that it is the unrestricted access to this same tree of life\u2014which appears again not surprisingly, in the New Jerusalem (i.e., the New Eden), in Revelation 22:2\u2014that enables the redeemed children of God to live, as they were meant, in a fixed state of &#8220;incorruptibility&#8221; (i.e., sinlessness) for all eternity. \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>I really like the connection Morris makes between the curse delivered to Adam and the suffering of Christ who took our curse upon Himself.
