{"id":4506,"date":"2019-01-01T20:46:50","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T02:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4506"},"modified":"2023-07-03T17:22:15","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T23:22:15","slug":"genesis-218-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4506","title":{"rendered":"Genesis 2:18-20"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-49\" class=\"text Gen-2-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0God said, \u201cIt is\u00a0not good that man should be alone;\u00a0I will make him a helper comparable to him.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-50\" class=\"text Gen-2-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Out of the ground the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord\u00a0<\/span>God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and\u00a0brought\u00a0them\u00a0to\u00a0Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that\u00a0was\u00a0its name.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-51\" class=\"text Gen-2-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">not good (v.18) \u2014 The last act of creation &#8230; was that of woman; hence, prior to this final work, the creation was yet incomplete. Man, especially, was incomplete without woman; and this was not good (this does <em>not<\/em> mean it was evil, but only that it was unfinished and therefore imperfect). \u2014 Morris, page 95.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">We are being presented here with a thought that has always been in the mind of the omniscient God, and from which, by its presentation <em>here<\/em>, we are to understand that God\u2014our divine Father\u2014knows what we need even before we ask (see<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2755\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 6:8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #008000;\">)\u2014or, indeed, even before we <em>realize<\/em>, as Adam here, that we need it! It is for this reason that God waits to meet that need\u2014and in so doing bring His creative work to completion\u2014that Adam might first realize that he has a need which only God, in His love and wisdom, can meet. The response from Adam when this need is eventually met will therefore be a greater sense of gratitude (and hence more glory) to God as well as a greater appreciation of the woman herself. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 85-86.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Some commentaries make a point of saying that Adam didn&#8217;t name all the animals at this time. Verse 19 doesn&#8217;t mention fish or creeping things. Those may have been named later. Also, at this time, only the created individuals of each <em>kind<\/em> existed. Kinds wouldn&#8217;t have had time (this naming may have happened on day 6) to develop into multiple species.<\/h3>\n<h3>whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name (v.19) \u2014 evidence of the dominion over creation that God gave man in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4473\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 1:26<\/span><\/a>. In addition, the exercise would have shown Adam that none of the animals could meet his own needs.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In this description of woman\u2014which occurs in the Bible only here [vs. 18 and 20]\u2014there are two key ideas: first, concerning the woman&#8217;s <em>role<\/em>, the word &#8220;helper,&#8221; according to its usage elsewhere in Scripture, indicates that she is to <em>assist<\/em> the man, who bears primary authority as well as responsibility, in accomplishing the task that God gave him\u2014to wit, worshiping and obeying God (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4499\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 2:15<\/span><\/a>). Second, concerning the woman&#8217;s <em>value<\/em> or <em>worth<\/em>, the expression &#8220;suitable for him&#8221;\u2014 literally &#8220;facing him,&#8221; as one might describe their image in a mirror\u2014underscores that woman is <em>intrinsically<\/em> all that man is, yet in the feminine, and hence she is of equal worth. This second part of the description, in other words, serves to balance and &#8220;head off&#8221; any potential misunderstanding of the first part\u2014to wit, the misunderstanding that the difference in the roles of the man and woman, and specifically the man&#8217;s holding of greater authority and responsibility, implies differing value or worth.
