The sinful, selfish nature of fallen man is such that he does not want God to rule the earth. The portrait painted by the inspired writer is that of a universal kingdom of God, in which the nations will be glad and sing for joy. For the first time in the history of the world, the the nations and the people will be judged righteously. For the first time, since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, will the earth yield her increase of fruit, as it did before sin entered the world. — Phillips, page 139.

__________

Structurally and thematically this psalm is organized in a beautifully symmetrical-chiastic fashion, with the first and third section focusing on God’s solicitude for Israel as the basis for worldwide praise, culminating in the center section (in which verses 3 and 5 mirror each other exactly) with a focus on God’s ideal and ultimate sovereignty over all nations, including Israel.
