To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. A Song.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

1 <\/span><\/span>Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>
\nAnd to You the\u00a0vow shall be performed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>O You who hear prayer,<\/span><\/em>
\nTo You all flesh will come.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>Iniquities prevail against me;<\/span><\/em>
\nAs for\u00a0our transgressions,<\/span><\/em>
\nYou will\u00a0provide atonement for them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

4 Blessed\u00a0is the man\u00a0You\u00a0choose,<\/span><\/em>
\nAnd cause to approach\u00a0You,<\/span><\/em>
\nThat\u00a0he may dwell in Your courts.<\/span><\/em>
\nWe shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,<\/span><\/em>
\nOf Your holy temple.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

5\u00a0<\/sup>By\u00a0awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us,<\/span><\/em>
\nO God of our salvation,<\/span><\/em>
\nYou who are\u00a0the confidence of all the ends of the earth,<\/span><\/em>
\nAnd of the far-off seas;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>Who established the mountains by His strength,<\/span><\/em>
\nBeing\u00a0clothed with power;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

7\u00a0<\/sup>You who still the noise of the seas,<\/span><\/em>
\nThe noise of their waves,<\/span><\/em>
\nAnd the tumult of the peoples.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>They also who dwell in the farthest parts are afraid of Your signs;<\/span><\/em>
\nYou make the outgoings of the morning and evening\u00a0rejoice.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

9\u00a0<\/sup>You\u00a0visit the earth and\u00a0water it,<\/span><\/em>
\nYou greatly enrich it;<\/span><\/em>
\nThe river of God is full of water;<\/span><\/em>
\nYou provide their grain,<\/span><\/em>
\nFor so You have prepared it.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

10\u00a0<\/sup>You water its ridges abundantly,<\/span><\/em>
\nYou settle its furrows;<\/span><\/em>
\nYou make it soft with showers,<\/span><\/em>
\nYou bless its growth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

11\u00a0<\/sup>You crown the year with Your goodness,<\/span><\/em>
\nAnd Your paths drip\u00a0with\u00a0abundance.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>They drop\u00a0on\u00a0the pastures of the wilderness,<\/span><\/em>
\nAnd the little hills rejoice on every side.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

13\u00a0<\/sup>The pastures are clothed with flocks;<\/span><\/em>
\nThe valleys also are covered with grain;<\/span><\/em>
\nThey shout for joy, they also sing.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

This joyous hymn was probably composed for use in the sanctuary on the occasion of one of the great annual festivals. It expressly dwells on the Divine bounty in the fertility of the earth (Leviticus 23:9-14). \u2014 Meyer, page 80.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Each of the three sections of this psalm deal with an expression of God’s grace towards man, beginning with that which is the greatest of all: His forgiveness of sin. He will hear the prayer and forgive the sin of all men (lit., “all flesh,” meaning any<\/em> human being, whether Jew or Gentile who come to Him\u2014the phraseology of which parallels Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Temple (see 1 Kings 8:41-43). “How blessed” is the one whom God thus chooses (v.4)\u2014i.e., chooses to forgive (per v.3). And if such forgiveness comes about by God’s choice, then it cannot come about through the striving or merit of man; it is, simply put, a gift of God.<\/span><\/h3>\n

God’s grace is expressed in His awesome deeds (v.5)\u2014i.e., the awe-inspiring miracles that He performed to deliver His people Israel. So too, just as Israel affirms in their “song” of response that God “has become my salvation” (Exodus 15:2), so too does David affirm in this “song” (as the psalm is called in its heading) that the Lord is the “God of our salvation.”<\/span><\/h3>\n

In the last section David focuses on God’s grace as expressed in His ongoing (not necessarily miraculous, as in the previous section) provision for His people\u2014as for mankind in general\u2014by upholding the natural order. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 171-172.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Williams’ take:<\/h3>\n

The remnant according to the election of grace (Romans 11:5<\/span>) here sings of the day of the establishment in Zion, and over the happy earth, of the Kingdom of God and the power of His Messiah (Revelation 12:10); of the new moral birth necessary to entrance into that Kingdom (v.4); of the sufferings of its subjects (v.3); and of the judgment of its foes (v.5). Israel will then perform her vow of praise (v.1), and the converted nations will unite with her in the worship of Messiah (vs. 2 and 8). \u2014 Williams, page 350.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
