But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God\u2019s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28272\" class=\"text Rom-13-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience\u2019 sake.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>minister for good \u2014 the government is for my welfare<\/h3>\n<h3>beareth not the sword in vain \u2014 the government has the right to capital punishment and lesser judicial sentences.<\/h3>\n<h3>avenger = one who deals justice. The word is used of God in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4236\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 4:6<\/span><\/a> \u2014 <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>wrath (verse 5) \u2014 external. The conscience is our internal judge.<\/h3>\n<h3>We should always view earthly relationships and situations in light of our relationship with God.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4\u00a0For he is God\u2019s minister to you for good.
