{"id":4285,"date":"2016-06-16T06:24:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T12:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4285"},"modified":"2023-03-11T08:36:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-11T14:36:00","slug":"1-thessalonians-519-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4285","title":{"rendered":"1 Thessalonians 5:19-22"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29641\" class=\"text 1Thess-5-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Do not quench the Spirit.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29642\" class=\"text 1Thess-5-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>Do not despise prophecies.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29643\" class=\"text 1Thess-5-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>Test all things; hold fast what is good.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29644\" class=\"text 1Thess-5-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>Abstain from every form of evil.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>quench (v.19) = extinguish, put out \u2014 generally refers to fire (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2862\">Matthew 12:20<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1822\">Hebrews 11:34<\/a><\/span>) \u2014 tense is &#8220;desist from quenching,&#8221; not &#8220;do not begin to quench&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>despise (v.20) = in Greek, an intensified form of the word for &#8220;reduce to nothing&#8221; \u2014 so, count as nothing, treat with utter contempt<\/h3>\n<h3>prophecies (v.20) \u2014 the word means &#8220;make clear before,&#8221; which refers to that aspect of prophecy which tells of the future, but in Scripture, the word refers to the declaration of that which cannot be known by natural means, a forthtelling of a message from God, whether about the past, present, or future. \u2014 Paul is instructing them not to write off revelation from God, whether directly communicated from God (as was the case with Paul himself) or whether written into Scripture (as was a the case with the letter from Paul they were reading at the moment, as well as all other Scripture).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">With the completion of the canon of Scripture prophecy passed away (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2434\">1 Corinthians 13:8-9<\/a><\/span>). In his measure the teacher has taken the place of the prophet, (cp. the significant change in 2 Peter 2:1). The difference is that, whereas the message of the prophet was a direct revelation of the mind of God for the occasion, the message of the teacher is gathered from the completed revelation contained in the Scriptures. \u2014 Vine, page 92.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>test (v.21) = prove, approve, examine<\/h3>\n<h3>good (v.21) = <em>kalos<\/em>, intrinsically good (as opposed to <em>agathos<\/em>, that which is beneficial in its effect). Here, it refers to the quality of the teaching in itself<\/h3>\n<h3>form (v.22) = lit. &#8220;that which can be see,&#8221; appearance, fashion, shape<\/h3>\n<h3>evil (v.22) = <em>poneros<\/em>, malignant, bad in influence and effect (as opposed to <em>kakos<\/em>, base, bad in character)<\/h3>\n<h3>form of evil (v.22) \u2014 The Greek can be interpreted as &#8220;every appearance of evil&#8221; or &#8220;every sort or type of evil.&#8221; There are plenty of other Scriptures that teach both meanings.
