{"id":4210,"date":"2016-04-30T09:10:05","date_gmt":"2016-04-30T15:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4210"},"modified":"2023-03-01T08:14:37","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T14:14:37","slug":"1-thessalonians-35-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4210","title":{"rendered":"1 Thessalonians 3:5-8"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-NKJV-29595\" class=\"text 1Thess-3-4\"><\/span> <em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29596\" class=\"text 1Thess-3-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span class=\"text 1Thess-3-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you \u2014<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29598\" class=\"text 1Thess-3-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29599\" class=\"text 1Thess-3-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>know (v.5) = ascertain, come to know, gain knowledge of \u2014 progress in knowledge as opposed to full knowledge<\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"en-NKJV-29596\" class=\"text 1Thess-3-5\">lest by some means the tempter had tempted you<\/span> (v.5) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5140\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 11:2-3<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>tempter (v.5) \u2014 Satan \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2705\">Matthew 4:3<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">tempted (v.5) \u2014 <em>Peirazo<\/em>, means, first, to attempt to do something, to assay, as in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1468\">Acts 9:26<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1606\">16:7<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1958\">24:6<\/a><\/span>; then, to make trial of deliberately, as the Queen of Sheba made trial whether Solomon were as wise as he was reputed to be, 1 Kings 10:1; and as the Pharisees made trial of the integrity of the Lord Jesus, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3158\">Matthew 19:3<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3208\">22:18<\/a><\/span>, and many places; or unconsciously, but not less really, as those who sinned in the wilderness made trial of the holiness of God, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2372\">1 Corinthians 10:9<\/a><\/span>, cp. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1695\">Hebrews 3:8-9<\/a><\/span>; as Ananias and his wife made trial whether the Holy Spirit were indeed with the church, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1372\">Acts 5:9<\/a><\/span>; and as the Jewish believers made trial of the grace of God, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1577\">Acts 15:10<\/a><\/span>. \u2014 Vine, page48.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>our labor might be in vain (v.5) \u2014 &#8220;might be without results&#8221; \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4165\">1 Thessalonians 2:1<\/a><\/span> \u2014Paul wasn&#8217;t saying that the Thessalonian believers could lose their salvation. They couldn&#8217;t. But they could lose their joy and comfort found in the grace message and also their testimony to those around them if they fell victim to Satan&#8217;s temptations.<\/h3>\n<h3>good news (v.6) = gospel \u2014 used in the Septuagint of any message calculated to have a cheering effect on those who receive it \u2014 the word &#8220;gospel&#8221; in Scripture, doesn&#8217;t always refer to the plan of salvation during this current dispensation<\/h3>\n<h3>your faith and love (v.6) \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4143\">1 Thessalonians 1:3<\/a><\/span> \u2014 The fact that Paul didn&#8217;t include hope here is significant in light of their confusion regarding the resurrection (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4247\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 4:13<\/span><\/a> and following).<\/h3>\n<h3>good (v.6) = inherently good, good in nature<\/h3>\n<h3>remembrance (v.6) \u2014 always used in connection with prayer (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1122\">Philippians 1:3<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3517\">2 Timothy 1:3<\/a><\/span>)<\/h3>\n<h3>therefore (v.7) \u2014 because of Timothy&#8217;s report (v.6)<\/h3>\n<h3>affliction (v.7) = used by Paul to refer to persecution at the hands of men, including mobs and rulers<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">distress (v.7) \u2014 Paul sometimes uses this word of an inward pressure of spirit, as in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2323\">1 Corinthians 9:16<\/a><\/span>, &#8220;necessity&#8221;; sometimes of lack of material things, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5013\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 6:4<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5219\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">12:10<\/span><\/a>, and here. \u2014 Vine, page 49<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">now we live (v.8) \u2014 Paul&#8217;s concern for his converts breathes through all his correspondence; cf. 2 Corinthians 11:28f. When they were led astray, he was indignant; when they slipped back, he was distressed; when they gave signs of living worthily of the gospel, he was overjoyed (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5171\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 7:6ff<\/span><\/a>.). \u2014 Guthrie, page 1158<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>live (v.8) = enjoy life<\/h3>\n<h3>if (v.8) = <em>ean<\/em>, used conditionally \u2014 <em>IF<\/em> they stand fast, Paul will enjoy life \u2014 This wasn&#8217;t intended to cast doubt on their faith but to show how important their stand was to Paul&#8217;s joy.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">in the Lord (v.8) \u2014 To others [Paul] writes, &#8220;Stand fast in the faith,&#8221; &#8220;stand fast in (your) liberty,&#8221; &#8220;Stand fast in one spirit,&#8221; etc. but here as to the persecuted Philippians, he encourages the Thessalonians to &#8220;stand fast <em>in the Lord<\/em>.&#8221; Mark well, he does not say, &#8220;Stand fast <em>for<\/em> the Lord,&#8221; but &#8220;<em>in<\/em> the Lord.&#8221; We must all learn this lesson where standing is concerned. By grace we believers have been given a position <em>in Christ<\/em>: &#8220;accepted&#8221; <em>in Christ<\/em> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3671\">Ephesians 1:6<\/a><\/span>), pronounced &#8220;complete&#8221; <em>in Christ<\/em> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2069\">Colossians 2:10<\/a><\/span>), blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies <em>in Christ<\/em> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3671\">Ephesians 1:3<\/a><\/span>). <em>All we have, we have in Christ<\/em>; all we are, we are in Him. Now, says the Apostle by the Spirit, <em>take your stand in Christ<\/em>. When the world opposes, when the flesh tempts, when Satan oppresses, and doubts arise, remember God sees you &#8220;in Christ,&#8221; His beloved Son, and since He has graciously given you this position, by all means <em>occupy it<\/em>, <em>enjoy it<\/em>, by faith.
